I am currently working on a Spring Roo application. Our Roo version is 1.0.2, our source control system is Jazz Team Server 1.0.0.2 (iFix3), and IDE is a packaged version of Eclipse (SpringSource Tool Suite 2.3.2).
I generally fire up the Roo Shell for my project as soon as the IDE opens. My problem is that this action always "dirties" all of my project's autogenerated aspect files and adds them to my pending changes list. A comparison of the files shows what looks like the addition of whitespace to the end of each line. I usually just undo these pending changes before I proceed with my work as I don't want change sets with hundreds of unchanged aspect files.
I have searched for an IDE setting to suppress these changes, but have not found anything that seems relevant. Has anyone else had this happen and found a way to fix it?

I'm working on multiple projects at the same time which are inter dependent. Sometimes, when one developer pushes updates to one project (for example Liquibase changes), they are picked up by my IntelliJ which immediately complains about missing columns when I restart the project. I did not explicitly issue any fetch/pull or update request against the remote repository. This is kind of annoying because I am then forced to pull all the new changes locally.
I remember my old IntelliJ version behaving normally (2019) so this is a new "feature" I guess? How can I disable it?
Could you please share screenshots of an issue? IDE doesn't run pull/fetch or upgrade automatically if you are using Git, but there is a chance that you may have Git Toolbox plugin installed and it has a feature for Auto-fetch and you need to disable it in settings
As an daily IntelliJ user you usually concentrate on the projects you are working on and IntelliJ is just a tool. You are not willing to dig into tool's problem itself. But this is what is forced on you by default after IntelliJ installation on MacOS and opening relatively big project(most of the projects nowadays are huge and have thousands of files and use numbers of IntelliJ 3rd party plugins).
Here is a minimal list of actions. IntelliJ must have set MORE RAM to be used by default.

From IntelliJ open Help / Show log in Finder and open idea.log file with Console.app; In Console.app press "Reload" and "Now" buttons to track "live" what IntelliJ is doing.
If in logs of IntelliJ you find that some of the plugins exit with fatal error, you just uninstall those plugins. For me the one that failed to the moment of this answer was "BashSupport" as example.

From IntelliJ open Help / Edit Custom Properties.... Here you can set same properties that will override global and will work only for current OS user.

Make sure your project build output for *.class files is set. Read: https://intellij-support.jetbrains.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/360000000584-Build-does-nothing . In my case when IntelliJ started project build it terminated without warnings shortly after.
Finally in my case none of 6 steps above solved the issue so I found this read: https://intellij-support.jetbrains.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/115000532044-IntelliJ-cannot-build-projects . Basically try reinstall IntelliJ from original distribution again.
I know that you must read https://www.jetbrains.com/help/idea every time you install a new version of IntelliJ, but why not to add some consistency into configuration process of the main java process that runs IntelliJ itself? You can ask how much ram to use during installation of IntelliJ and explain why it is so. Then Help digging won't be necessary in the first place for devs who fed up with changing those default settings that will be always more than 700MB. I think for most devs out there it is at least 10x of that. I bet what makes most devs mad about this is not the fact that you need to do some options changing, but where those options are depending on OS plus the fact that you simply forget why IntelliJ app just exits while you are doing a debugging of your own app. I bet this problem makes us mad since first java based IDEs appeared. User-friendly is the key here and explicit reminders within the app itself would help.
I have been using Eclipse Helios/Luna with plugin installation of clearcase plugin 8.0.1.x version and have imported the base code.
Recently, when trying to change the config-spec to update the build files, the process is running for hours continuously even without a single file.
Previously, we had Clearcase version as 7.0.x version and the corresponding plugin installed on Eclipse Helios without facing any issues.
But, have been facing issues during update of files after the upgrade of clearcase server to 8.0.x and with the corresponding client plugin in eclipse.
Also, tried manual update from repository for the whole folder. Still no luck.
But, if I know manually update the file one by one individually, it is going fine.
As the number of files in the project is more, it would not be efficient for us.
Can someone provide some alternatives to resolve this problem?
As a workaround, we have been creating new views everytime there is an update to the config-spec.
One workaround would be to switch to dynamic views, supported in the latest 8.x version of ClearTeam/ClearCase. No reload needed with those kind of views.
The other would be to test with a minimal config spec, and load rules making sure you are loading only as few files as possible (jsut to check that those files do update when you change the config spec).
It can also depends on the exact version of your ClearCase installation.
There are some patches for hanging issue (like "PM48668 Problem: The IBM Rational ClearTeam Explorer may hang intermittently when many views are started.")
As I am using eclipse and just set up a dropwizard server. On the command prompt I typed in java -jar target/hello-world-0.0.1-SNAPSHOT.jar server hello-world.yml and is running. Yet when ever I make a change to my eclipse file, like changing the yml file for example it doesn't update. I have to crtl+c and re-run what I typed in above. My question is, is there a faster way of testing so that it updates every time I change something or I just have to deal with the testing. Thanks.
Run from within the IDE
Different Java IDEs permit more efficient workflows. For example, in an IDE you can run up your application using a Runtime Configuration that executes your Service.main() method with parameters of server hello-world.yml. This will save you endless Maven builds.
Unfortunately, with Eclipse the hot swapping of code changes is often cumbersome, so I would recommend that you consider Intellij which is more reliable when it comes to hot swapping code. Even then hot swapping can be risky.
Sometimes a restart is unavoidable
That being said, in your situation hot swapping won't help. You are changing the startup configuration file which is only read at startup. You will have to restart to see the changes unless you create your own dynamic-refresh-on-file-hash-change mechanism (not advised).
One alternative is to put much of your configuration testing in unit tests and verify that your code is responding as expected.
Static assets give an optimal workflow (no restarts)
You may encounter a situation where you only want to change static assets (like JavaScript files) in which case Intellij will allow you to simply recompile on the fly and will copy the changed assets into the /target directory and have them immediately picked up by Dropwizard without a restart.
If you wanted to go one step further you could enlist the services of Grunt.js so that it continuously monitored the src/main/resources/assets (or similar) for changes and then automatically update your /target for you. Again, Intellij will autosave on focus change so this would lead to an optimal workflow where you change the asset, wait one second, refresh browser and see the immediate result.

What is the right way to make an RCP application that is “ready for plugins”? I have struggled to do this basic concept and am trying to accomplish this in Eclipse 3.7 (latest 3.x version).
Step 1
I would like to explore this by using 3 eclipse plugin projects:
• HelloWorldRCP
• HelloWorldPluginA
• HelloWorldPluginB
Would it make sense to make HelloWorldRCP with all the common things such as a menu-bar with an Edit menu including cut, copy and paste menu items? The HelloWorldPluginA could add an additional menu-item called “Alpha” and HelloWorldPluginB could add yet another menu-item called “Beta”? However, the cut, copy and paste functionality could still work within Plugin A and B?
Step 2
Next, how do I deploy this as a “product”? I have made a new product configuration and defined the dependencies from the default runtime configuration that was made. I do notice that there are a lot of dependency jars that are included, but I don’t think I use them. For example, I don’t use data-binding to my knowledge, but it keeps coming up as a required dependency.
I go to Export | Eclipse Product and an executable environment is created in my desired folder. However, when I copy this to another machine it seems to keep referencing the original machines Java installation location. How does one get around this?
I have tried to bundle a jre with the Product Export but nothing is created. I have also just tried copying my jre6 as a jre folder. This does seem to work.
Next problem here is the 32/64 bit Java execution environments. What is advised here? I have been aiming to build on 32 bit only and then hopefully that will run on 32 or 64bit platforms. Is this correct?
Step 3
I need to web-start this now. The old way of initiating an Eclipse 3.5 application, using a startup.jar has changed. I now use the equinox launcher and reference it in the jnlp instead of the startup.jar. However, I keep getting an exception which seems related to the 32/64 bit equinox win32_64 jar. I notice that the export writes a folder and not a jar. I read somewhere that this is a “clever trick” to allow compatibility for both 32 and 64bit runtime environments.
The problem here is that I need a jar and not a folder so that I can sign the jars required and deploy accordingly.
Does anyone have a Java Web-start example for and Eclipse 3.7 RCP application? Or any advice?

Another thing you'll want to investigate is Tycho. I realize that you didn't mention anything about building your application, but I've found that using Tycho for building has made my most recent foray into Eclipse RCP 100 times better than the other times I've done RCP work. The learning curve of Eclipse RCP is somewhat steep, but I think it's worth the effort.
