Do I need to Subclass from NSObject? - objective-c

I'm starting Objective-C Development and I'm trying to wrap my head around how some things work.
I'm creating a Twitter Client and have a class "Tweet". This is just a DTO - a class that has some variables.
Should this just be a class or should it inherit from NSObject?
Why? Or why not?

Every normal class should subclass from NSObject. Basic memory management like -retain and -release, and runtime introspection like -isKindOfClass:, -respondsToSelector: cannot work without it.

You should, unless you have a very explicit, strong reason not to. In Objective-C, any object can be assigned to an id. But id doesn't guarantee any methods at all, even the standard operations such as allocation, initialization, deallocation and reference counting.
These are implemented by a root class, which is almost always an NSObject.
Also, most of the Cocoa API expects to deal with an NSObject, because it needs to at least retain and release the object.
So you should inherit from NSObject.

Objective-c: Reference to ivar persistent? Good idea?

I have a situation where I'm keeping references to ivars which need to be persistent. In one object, I have an array of pointers to ivars in another object, which are used over the entire lifetime of the program. In other words, I'm not just passing a reference to retrieve a value -- I'm keeping the pointers around.
Is this a valid? Is it possible that the ivars might move? Are there cases where objects instantiated objects are moved around at runtime unbeknownst to the program? Or, do objects stay exactly where they are created. If the later is the case, is there any reason not to use references the way I am?
I'm using ARC.
Note: This probably wasn't a good way to design this to begin with, but... it's all done and working 99%! (except for a nasty crash which reboots the entire phone... )
Objects and their instance variables don't move once created. However, you also need to keep a strong reference to the object that holds the ivar. Otherwise, the object might be deallocated, leaving you with a dangling pointer.
Note that it is generally a very bad idea to have pointers to another object's insntance variables.
While there's no technical problem with accessing the ivars from outside (as rob stated) there's still the architectural design to consider: The approach you've taken breaks encapsulation. Additionally it is very uncommon for Objective-C.
So regarding maintainability of your code I would recommend to refactor the code. In Objective-C there's no friend declaration as in C++, so it's unusual to access ivars from outside the declaring class.
Let's say an object of class A wants to access the ivars of an object of class B persistently (in your example).
What you normally do is create a property (with the strong annotation, like #property (strong) ClassB *myBVar) in class A to reference an object of class B.
If you want to set or read B's properties you use the dot notation or call the getter/setter methods:
myBVar.name = #"Jim";
NSLog(#"Name:%#",myBVar.name);
[myBVar setName:#"Jim"];
NSLog(#"Name:%#",[myBVar name]);
You never call a ivar directly as it's implementation might change.

Methods required to be implemented when subclassing in Objective C

I am new at programming in general (though I have had a C class many, many years ago) and am learning Objective-C for programming on the iPhone. I have what I think is a simple question, but after looking for a while (days, off and on) I can't find the answer that I'm looking for explicitly.
I know that when subclassing an Objective-C class I should implement the initialize method along with the deallocate method (unless using ARC for the latter, if I am correct?). The questions are:
Are these the only two to worry about, or will other classes potentially have additional methods that can be required to be implemented?
If other classes might have methods that I am required to implement when subclassing them, where is that documentation typically found? (I don't seem to see that in the Apple framework docs, though that kind of information is there for protocols it appears)

Technically, you are not required to implement even the init and dealloc if the inherited versions are sufficient. Also, ARC does not free you from having to write dealloc in all cases (but it certainly covers the overwhelming majority). For example, if you allocate memory for your object using malloc, you need to free it in the dealloc.
When you add instance variables to your class, you need to initialize them. Typically, you do that in a designated initializer. Again, if you do not to initialize anything, you do not have to code your own initializer; same goes for deinitializer.
The only case when you need to implement a method is when you adopt a protocol with one or more methods marked #requried. These methods are marked in the protocol reference. For example, tableView:cellForRowAtIndexPath: and tableView:numberOfRowsInSection: are marked with the "required method" tag in Apple's documentation.
No methods are required when subclassing an NSObject (or any of their subclasses, such as UIViewController, UIView, etc. etc.).
If you create a new, let's say UIViewController, it's generally a good idea to keep the methods you find in the newly created file as a guideline/template, but you're not really required to keep any of the methods. The super class will always call the methods on itself.
Be aware, though, some methods you have to call super, like viewWillAppear, etc.

Can an ObjC class object conform to a protocol?

Is there a way to indicate to the compiler that a class object conforms to a protocol?
As I understand, by creating +(void)foo class methods, an instance of that class object will have those methods as instance methods. So, as long as I create +(void)foo methods for all required protocol methods, I can have a class object act as a delegate.
My problem of course is that in the class's header file, I only know how to indicate that instances of the class conform to the protocol (as is typically the case). So, the best I've figured out is to cast the class object like so:
something.delegate = (id<SomethingDelegate>)[self class]
Any ideas?

What you're doing now is correct as it will silence warnings which is your goal. You will be sending the class object messages defined in the protocol for instances which is a bit confusing, but the runtime doesn't care.
Think about it this way: you want to set a delegate to an object that responds to the messages defined in the protocol. Your class does this, and your class is also an object. Therefore, you should treat your class like an object that conforms to that protocol. Therefore, what you've written is completely correct (based on what you're trying to do).
One thing to note, though, is this class will not properly respond to conformsToProtocol:. This is generally okay for a delegate setup anyway (delegates don't usually check if the class conforms — they just check if it can respond to a selector).
As a side note, one thing you can do syntactically is:
Class<SomethingDelegate> variable = (Class<SomethingDelegate>)[self class];
The difference here is that the compiler will use the class methods from the protocol instead of instance messages. This is not what you want in your case, though.
There is no Objective-C syntax to indicate that a metaclass conforms to a protocol.
I think you can do it at runtime, by using class_addProtocol on the metaclass. But I haven't tried it.
I guess you could also write a +conformsToProtocol: method on your class, and lie about your conformance. This could have unexpected side-effects, since there's already a +conformsToProtocol: on NSObject (in addition to -conformsToProtocol:).
Neither of these will eliminate the need for a cast to shut the compiler up. Just use a singleton.

When to retain a "delegate"

I know that in Objective-C you should never retain your delegates because it may cause a retain-cycle, however, how do you know the difference between a delegate and a non-delegate object ? Can't it be said that just sending a message to any object is delegating work to that object ?
A delegate in Objective-C has a fairly well established definition. They're typically used in classes that are already implemented, but have some options for customization.
For example, the UIApplicationDelegate is used to implement application specific behavior so that you don't have to subclass UIApplication. This helps to minimize boilerplate code.
Also, delegate objects are usually kept around using the delegate property. I would argue that any object that isn't the delegate property, isn't a delegate object. The delegate objects are usually used to act on behalf of the regular object.

Difference Between Object And NSObject

I'm learning Objective-C and as I can see, in some tutorials they use Object(imported from objc/Object.h) and in others i see the use of NSObject(imported from Foundation/NSObject.h), but what are the main differences between they?

You should ignore Object.
Objective-C allows multiple root classes. Object is a root class that predates NSObject. It's never something you would want to go use. It's only relevant when something somehow already interacts with Object, so you have to deal with it. This is very rare.
Object doesn't implement -retain and -release, for example.
Objective-C is just the language.
The Cocoa frameworks use the NSObject base class as the root class for the hierarchy. Other implementations use their own root classes, in your case the Object class.
