How do I specify the platform for MSBuild? - msbuild

I am trying to use MSBuild to build a solution with a specified target platform (I need both binaries, x86 and x64). This is how I tried it:

However the build always fails if the platform is different from "Any CPU". What am I doing wrong?

If I try to build it for x86/x64 with devenv it works perfectly, however I am trying to set up a build server without installing all the necessary versions of Visual Studio. By the way, if there is a better free tool (that supports .NET framework 4) out there, I'd love to hear about it.

In MSBuild or Teamcity use command line
MSBuild yourproject.sln /property:Configuration=Release /property:Platform=x64
or use shorter form:
MSBuild yourproject.sln /p:Configuration=Release /p:Platform=x64
However you need to set up platform in your project anyway, see the answer by Julien Hoarau.

If you want to build your solution for x86 and x64, your solution must be configured for both platforms. Actually you just have an Any CPU configuration.
How to check the available configuration for a project
To check the available configuration for a given project, open the project file (*.csproj for example) and look for a PropertyGroup with the right Condition.
If you want to build in Release mode for x86, you must have something like this in your project file:
<PropertyGroup Condition=" '$(Configuration)|$(Platform)' == 'Release|x86' ">

</PropertyGroup>

If you're trying to do this from the command line, you may be encountering an issue where a machine-wide environment variable 'Platform' is being set for you and working against you. I can reproduce this if I use the VS2012 Command window instead of a regular windows Command window.
At the command prompt type:
set platform
In a VS2012 Command window, I have a value of 'X64' preset. That seems to interfere with whatever is in my solution file.
In a regular Command window, the 'set' command results in a "variable not defined" message...which is good.
If the result of your 'set' command above returns no environment variable value, you should be good to go.

For platform I was specifying "Any CPU", changed it to "AnyCPU" and that fixed the problem.

If you look at your .csproj file you'll see the correct platform name to use.

For VS2017 and 2019... with the modern core library SDK project files, the platform can be changed during the build process. Here's an example to change to the anycpu platform, just before the built-in CoreCompile task runs:

In my case, I'm building an FPGA with BeforeTargets and AfterTargets tasks, but compiling a C# app in the main CoreCompile. (partly as I may want some sort of command-line app, and partly because I could not figure out how to omit or override CoreCompile)
To build for multiple, concurrent binaries such as x86 and x64: either a separate, manual build task would be needed or two separate project files with the respective <PlatformTarget>x86</PlatformTarget> and <PlatformTarget>x64</PlatformTarget> settings in the example, above.

When you define different build configurations in your visual studio solution for your projects using a tool like ConfigurationTransform, you may want your Teamcity build, to build you a specified build configuration. You may have build configurations e.g., Debug, Release, Dev, UAT, Prod etc defined. This means, you will have MSBuild Configuration transformation setup for the different configurations. These different configurations are usually used when you have different configurations, e.g. different database connection strings, for the different environment. This is very common because you would have a different database for your production environment from your playground development environment.
They say a picture is worth a thousand words, please see the image below how you would specify multiple build configurations in Teamcity.
In the commandline input text box, specify as below
/p:OutputPath=Publish;Configuration=Dev
Here, I have specified two commandline build configurations/arguments OutputPath and build Configuration with values Publish and Dev respectively, but it could have been, UAT or Prod configuration. If you want more, simply separate them by semi-colon,;

There is an odd case I got in VS2017, about the space between ‘Any’ and 'CPU'.
this is not about using command prompt.
If you have a build project file, which could call other solution files. You can try to add the space between Any and CPU, like this (the Platform property value):

Before I fix this build issue, it is like this (ProjectPlatform is a global variable, was set to 'AnyCPU'):

Also, we have a lot projects being called using $ (ProjectPlatform), which is 'AnyCPU' and work fine. If we open proj file, we can see lines liket this and it make sense.

So my conclusion is,
'AnyCPU' works for calling project files, but not for calling solution files,
for calling solution files, using 'Any CPU' (add the space.)
For now, I am not sure if it is a bug of VS project file or MSBuild.
I am using VS2017 with VS2017 build tools installed.

In Visual Studio 2019, version 16.8.4, you can just add

TFS Build 2013 avoid code analysis

How can I avoid code analysis running on TFS Builds at a solution level?
I understand I can do this at a project level, but there are over 200 projects in my C# solution and I'd like to switch off Code Analysis at solution level if its possible.
I still need to run code analysis on developers machines.
I want to save time by not running code analysis on a specific TFS Build (we use SonarQube for CodeAnalysis on a separate build pipeline and so we don't need TFS Build to do it's own Code Analysis)
I have tried the following in my MSBuild arguments :
/p:RunCodeAnalysis=false
/p:RunCodeAnalysis=Never
(This is using the default TfcvTemplate.12.xaml)
But even with these changes I can still see from the build logs that Code Analysis is still occuring:

I'm using Tools Version 14 coupled with Microsoft.Compilers NuGet package to allow C#6 on our TFS 2013 Build Server.
Is there a way to avoid running code analysis at solution level, using just the MSBuild args in a TFS2013 build definition?
The RunCodeAnalysis property is used by the old style FxCop static binary analyzers. The new Roslyn Analyzers do not follow this setting.
There are two options...
You can create a Directory.Build.targets1 file in the root folder of your solution (you can create it during build if needed) and remove the analyzers just before the compiler is invoked:

Publish web project from JetBrains Rider

I am giving Rider a try, and so far, quite like it.
One feature I use in Visual Studio quite often is right click on a web project and publish to our testing server.
I cannot find a similar option in Rider, so what I have done is, create a run configuration, with the following settings:
Exe path: C:/Program Files (x86)/Microsoft Visual Studio/2017/Enterprise/MSBuild/15.0/Bin/amd64/msbuild.exe
Arguments: MySolution.sln /m /p:DeployOnBuild=True /p:PublishProfile=My-Project "/p:platform=Any CPU" /p:configuration=Release /p:VisualStudioVersion=15.0 /p:Password=****
Working Directory: C:\SolutionFolder
When I want to publish, I select it from the drop-down and click run.
This works 100%.
My question is, is this the best way to do it, sans setting up a CI pipeline? Am I missing an option or setting in the IDE?
As of June 2018, Rider doesn't have UI for publishing.
There is a feature request which you can vote for, once logged in YouTrack.
As a workaround, one can create a '.NET Executable' configuration like you did, and run it when you want to publish your project.
More detailed instructions follows:

Latest versions of Rider support publishing via UI. If you don't have Visual Studio installed on your machine, make sure the web project has Build.Microsoft.VisualStudio.Web.targets nuget package installed.

Command-line Package Service Fabric Application

Our continuous delivery set-up, until recently, was delivering Service Fabric packages using the following command:
msbuild SFApp.sfproj /t:Package
This was necessary because the target Package is unavailable at the solution level. I.e. The command
msbuild SFSolution.sln /t:Package
Fails, as the target does not exist.
As our dependency mesh grows, it gets to a point in which most interfaces projects will not build without a solution file (to work around the "OutputPath does not exist" red herring). There seems to be a way to do that according to this answer. Unfortunately, while targets like Clean work…

Or how can I otherwise package a Service Fabric application from the command line?
It's bad idea to compile sfproj file(and any other project file) without sln, because it can bring wrong content to its output from referenced projects. Only solution has a knowledge about what project to compile in what configuration.
To make Package similar to "Right Click->Package" in VS:
Just add to your sfproj the following target

And then running normal build on solution you may trigger the package step by /p:ForcePackageTarget=true :

MSBuild only supports a small set of target names that can be specified at the solution level. As you've discovered, Package is not one of them. You'll need to execute two separate calls to MSBuild: one which builds the solution and one which calls the Package target on the sfproj. The Package target of an sfproj has a dependency on the Build target so it will ensure that the sfproj and its project dependencies are built.
I had the same problem and fixed it by changing the Platform in the failing projects to explicitly build for x64.
Click Build > Configuration Manager and make sure that the assemblies are compiled for the x64 platform, that should also set the Output Paths in the corresponding .csproj files.
The actual command line action that is being executed is this:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\MSBuild\14.0\bin\amd64\msbuild.exe" "C:\agent\_work\1\s\Project\SFProject.sfproj" /t:Package /p:platform="x64" /p:configuration="release" /p:VisualStudioVersion="14.0"
Use the below script.

Service fabric requires Target to be set in x64 platform,
So change all you reference projects target to x64 platform.
you can do this by using configuration properties of your solution. If x64 is not listed in 'Configuration Properties' click configuration manager in the same window and under platform column for the required project add new project platform as x64.

We have had the exact same problem as you had and I have been looking around for a solution all over the web and did some experiments. Those are the steps that worked for us:
Don't manually add a target anywhere as suggested by other answers on StackOverflow. Not necessary. Especially in a CI environment, you want to build the projects separately anyways.
Prepare the projects in the Solution: Change the target platform for all projects to x64
Build the application
msbuild.exe SFAplication.xproj /p:Configuration=Release /target:rebuild
Package the App
msbuild.exe SFAplication.sfproj /p:Configuration=Release /target:Package

The OutputPath property is not set for project

Building my Jenkins/MSBuild solution gives me this error

I have figured out how it works (without changing sln/csproj properties in VS2013/2015).
if you want to build .sln file:
/p:ConfigurationPlatforms=Release /p:Platform="Any CPU"
if you want to build .csproj file:
/p:Configuration=Release /p:Platform=AnyCPU
notice the "Any CPU" vs AnyCPU
check the code analysis, fxcop, test coverage(NCover) targets, as well as the MSBUILD should be located properly. In my case its:
C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v4.0.30319
but it can be different as you can see microsoft has given 6 cmd options to build code base::AMD (with cross plt, x86 & x64 options) and Windows(cross, x86, x64) and that also when code development happened with default JIT (it can be PreJIT ngen.exe, econoJIT)
I think more than this troubleshooting can be handle using power shell + msbuild. May be helpful for someone ...

Do you have a 'Latest' build configuration? If not add the above section to the csproj.
As mentioned by perlyking, rather than editing the csproj XML The following worked for me. Here are the steps I used.
Open the Project Properties.
Select the Build Tab.
Under the Output section, Check that an output path is set. (if not set one, save the project and it should work).
If it is set, click on the "Browse..." button of the output path.
When the folder selection dialog opens, Navigate up one level in the
file browser and then re-select the output folder and click
the "Select Folder" button.
Save the project properties and it should work.
To add to what #James said, I found that if I looked at the project Compile properties in VS2013, the Build Output Path was specified. But when I examined the .csproj file directly, the OutputPath element was missing for the relevant build configuration. So in VS I simply made and reversed a minor edit to the output path, saved it, and that kicked the value into the project file, and I was then able to build.
I was using MSBuild to build multiple .sln files, and had added a new step to build a .csproj file as well, when I encountered this error.
#Saurabh's answer highlighted the root of the problem. However, when fixing it, adding /p:Platform=AnyCPU to the MSBuild Arguments section didn't fix it. I actually needed to update the Platform value on the build step.
All other build steps were using the $(BuildPlatform) variable value (which happened to be "any cpu", with a space in it).
(Had I been building multiple .csproj files, I probably would have created a second variable for the AnyCPU platform.)
For me the answer was to fix all the projects in Build > Configuration Manager.
If you have some projects where the name or platform does not match the solution configuration, you should change it so they all match.
I was running into this issue while updating an older project with additional project configurations for per-environment config transforms.
It turns out that when the project configurations were added to the csproj file, they were inserted after an Import element which caused the issue.

I got this error only when I was publishing my web project. I had mistakenly selected the wrong build configuration when setting up the publish profile.
I had same issue. I have updated my windows platform by using command line. Currently i got updated to windows#5.0.0 version. Then you need to search for file name "SQLite3.UWP.vcxproj". Try to change "v141" to "v140". Currently I am using Visual Studio 2015 professional. If it's Visual Studio 2017, then there is no need to change version in SQLite3.UWP.vcxproj file.
In my case this error happened because the output folder included a dot to make it relative to the current directory. The problem was solved by removing the dot.
The offending Build output path was:
.\bin\Output
The problem was solved by changing it to
bin\Output
The build output path can be found in the Build tab of the project properties, and there is a different path for each combination of Configuration and Platform.
Just had the issue for some service fabric stuff in MSBuild.
First step was right clicking each affected project and pulling up their Properties, selecting the Build tab, then setting the platform target to x64.
Second step was to go into the configuration manager and set each project to also use x64 for Debug and Release.
This was for a VS2017 project.
I had the same problem on a few projects. After adding a new configuration to the projects, the PropertyGroup was added at the very end of the Project file.
Moving the PropertyGroup to right after all the other configurations PropertyGroup fixed the issue.

I had this witha slightly unusual SLN/CSPROJ file arrangement:
I had project files:
A.csproj, with configurations "Dev" and "Production"
B.csproj, with configurations "Dev" and "Production"
C.csproj, a "common" library used by both A and B with configurations "Dev" and "Production"
And I had SLN files:
AC.sln, with configuration "Production" - this is used by jenkins to build project A and the common library
BC.sln, with configuration "Production" - this is used by jenkins to build project B and the common library
ABC.sln, with configuration "Dev" - this is used by developers in VS to write new code without having to keep opening different solutions (this answer is a simplified view of a 55-project solution)
I'd made an edit to the common library and introduced a dependency on project A. AC.sln would still build in jenkins but BC.sln gave an error saying:
The OutputPath property is not set for project 'A.csproj'. Please check to
make sure that you have specified a valid combination of Configuration and Platform
for this project. Configuration='Debug' Platform='AnyCPU'.
It was initially puzzling because we don't even have a Debug config anywhere in any project; find in files for Debug| turned up 0 hits
ABC.sln that the human developers use in VS would also build fine. Building BC.sln gave an error that A.dll wasn't found
When the circular irresolvable problem of C depending on A was removed, everything started working again
This error is misleading and can be caused by a different issue. Check the entire message:
The OutputPath property is not set for project 'myproject'. Please check to make sure that you have specified a valid combination of Configuration and Platform for this project. Configuration='myconfig' Platform='AnyCPU'. This error may also appear if some other project is trying to follow a project-to-project reference to this project, this project has been unloaded or is not included in the solution, and the referencing project does not build using the same or an equivalent Configuration or Platform.
My build configuration was missing this node in the csproj:
<PlatformTarget>AnyCPU</PlatformTarget>
Despite saying AnyCPU was the selected Platform in the dropdown, the actual xml was not there. Adding it fixed the mismatch between the project and the other project it was referencing.
The OutputPath property is not set for project error message will appear if a Platform environment variable exists (as seems to happen on HP laptops) and the target of MSBuild contains a reference to another Visual Studio project.
After renaming the Platform environment variable my build now works.
It seems the parameter /p:Platform="Any CPU" gets applied to the target solution but doesn't 'carryover' to referenced projects. In my instance, the error message indicated referenced projects were using the environment variable Platform=MCD.
I had two project configs, Debug and Release. When the Release build was used, it was throwing this error. The issue I found was that in the csproj file, the Debug config was near the top and the Release config was all the way at the bottom.
Manually moving the Release build just below the Debug build fixed it.
I'm assuming I did something incorrectly when setting up my build configurations because this doesn't feel like something I should have had to manually adjust.
Edit the properties of the project:
Make sure "Configuration Properties->General->Output Directory" is not blank. Note, it's not called OutputPath here. You can probably copy the value from Intermediate Directory.
I encountered the same problems when build TheXTech (https://github.com/Wohlstand/TheXTech/wiki/Building-on-Windows#building-in-visual-studio-201520172019-and-cmake) recently. And finally I found it is a cmake -A issue. The correct arch for 64 bit on windows is x64, not Win64.

Go to Solution properties and change the configuration to Any CPU or X64 or X86, and if build is checked uncheck that for what you are getting error for. By default, project build that for build configuration in solution and throw error as mentioned when building the project.

Overriding MSBuildExtensionsPath in the MSBuild task is flaky

I am attempting to override the property $(MSBuildExtensionsPath) when building a solution containing a C# web application project via msbuild. I am doing this because a web application csproj file imports the file "$(MSBuildExtensionsPath)\Microsoft\VisualStudio\v9.0\WebApplications\Microsoft.WebApplication.targets". This file is installed by Visual Studio to the standard $(MSBuildExtensionsPath) location (C:\Program Files\MSBuild). I would like to eliminate the dependency on this file being installed on the machine (I would like to keep my build servers as "clean" as possible). In order to do this, I would like to include the Microsoft.WebApplication.targets in source control with my project, and then override $(MSBuildExtensionsPath) so that the csproj will import this included version of Microsoft.WebApplication.targets. This approach allows me to remove the dependency without requiring me to manually modify the web application csproj file.
This scheme works fine when I build my solution file from the command line, supplying the custom value of $(MSBuildExtensionsPath) at the command line to msbuild via the /p flag. However, if I attempt to build the solution using the MSBuild task in a custom msbuild project file (overriding MSBuildExtensionsPath using the "Properties" attribute), it fails because the web app csproj file is attempting to import the Microsoft.WebApplication.targets from the "standard" Microsoft.WebApplication.targets location (C:\Program Files\MSBuild). Notably, if I run msbuild using the "Exec" task in my custom project file, it works. Even more notably, the FIRST time I run the build using the "MSBuild" task AFTER I have run the build using the "EXEC" task (or directly from the command line), the build works.
Has anyone seen behavior like this before? Am I crazy? Is anyone aware of the root cause of this problem, a possible workaround, or whether this is a legitimate bug in MSBuild?
Steps to Reproduce:
1) Create a new empty solution in MSVS 2008 (Fake.sln)
2) Add a new C# web application to the solution (WebApplication1.csproj)
3) Close MSVS
4) Copy the contents of "C:\Program Files\MSBuild\" to a directory called "MSBuildExtensions" in the directory containing your solution.
5) rename the directory "C:\Program Files\MSBuild\Microsoft\VisualStudio\v9.0\WebApplications" so that WebApplication1.csproj will not be able to import Microsoft.WebApplication.targets from that location.
6) Create a custom MSBuild project file called "TestBuild.proj" in the same directory as the solution. It should have the following content:

7) execute "msbuild TestBuild.proj" from a MSVS command prompt (note: the build may succeed the first time, but will fail if you run more than once)
Did you try setting the environment variable MSBuildExtensionPath in the CMD prompt and then running your build?
For example:
C:\> SET MSBuildExtensionsPath=C:\My\MSBuild\Extensons
Then on this project file:

This works from v4.0 as well. Although, support is generally better in v4.0 for things like this. And, v4.0 is 100% backward compatible (bugs not withstanding). So, you can build your v3.5 and prior projects with v4.0. Just select ToolsVersion 3.5.

This is a bug in MSBuild 3.5 but it is fixed in MSBuild 4.
If you can, switch to MSBuild 4 (you still can compile your 3.5 projects), otherwise you'll have to override the property in the project file.
It works fine if you override MSBuildExtensionsPath directly in the web app .csproj file.
