I have a datamodel with to-many to-many relations. Using the example of employee database let say the entity division is related to department which in turn is related to employee. The employee has an attribute salary. How best to have a attribute at the level of division which is derived from the salary attribute. For example average salary or maximum salary.
I would need those attributes to sort the list of departments.

Have a look at this question in the Core Data FAQ. If you can't do it with KVC set/array operators, then you try to do the keyPathsForValuesAffectingValueForKey : trick. If that isn't viable, you have to use KVO to observe changes in the key path the value is derived from.

Have a look at the KVC Set and Array Operators. Using one of these (#avg in your example) wrapped in a custom read only property should fit the bill.

How to make an object property unique?

I'm learning about the principles of OOP and was doing this exercise question.
We are given a school. The school has classes of students. Each class has
a set of teachers. Each teacher teaches a set of courses. The students
have a name and unique number in the class. Classes have a unique text
identifier. Teachers have names. Courses have a name, count of classes
and count of exercises. The teachers as well as the students are people.
Your task is to model the classes (in terms of OOP) along with their

diagram with Visual Studio.
I am not sure how to ensure the parts in bold. What I was doing was just normally making the adjectives properties. I am not sure how to ensure that other objects are not able to have the same unique number. I was thinking of using the Dictionary data structure which doesn't allow duplicates. I would use this unique number as the key and the object to be its value. Is my line of thought correct here?

SQL database - when to use a separate table vs a column of an existing one?

So I am pretty new to SQL and databases in general(only designed a very simple one for a minimal site), and I'm trying to work out the best way to design some models for a heavily DB driven site. So take for example, a user uploaded gallery. I have a gallery table with sensible columns like date uploaded, name, etc., and galleries can belong to one category, of which there will not be that many (at most like 6). Should I have the category be a column of the gallery table? Or have a separate table for categories and have a many to one relationship between the category and gallery tables? I would like to do things in my views like sorting all galleries in a category by date uploaded, is there a performance/convenience difference between these? Having the category be a column of the Gallery table certainly seems easier to deal with than me, but I'm not sure what is the best practice. Thanks.
First of all, you need to understand the conceptual difference.
As a rule of thumb, you are safe to consider the following equivalence:
Table ~~~ Entity
Column ~~~ Attribute
So, when you need to add a new piece of data, in relation to an Entity (an existing Table), the question you can ask yourself is:
Is this piece of data an attribute of the entity?
If the answer is yes, then you need a new column.
For instance, say you have a table describing the Student entity:
Table Student:
[PK] Id
[FK] IdClass
Name
Surname
Say you want to also add the GPA of each student. This is obviously an attribute of the student, so you can add the GPA column in the Student table.
If however you wish to define the Department for each Student, you will see that the department is not an attribute of a Student. The Department is an entity, it exists and has its own attributes outside the scope of the student.
Therefore, the attribute of the student is the affiliation to a certain Department, but not the department itself.
So, you will create a new Department table, and use the Department.Id as a FK in the Students table.

If you have a one to many relationship between categories and galleries, you want category to be a separate table.
When in doubt use a separate table.
It does not have such a big impact on speed and you will gain more control.

CoreData referencing

My application is CoreData based but they may be a common theory for all relational databases:
I have a Output-Input to-many relationship in my model. There are potentially an unlimited number of links under this relationship for each entity. What is the best way to identify a specific input or output?
The only way I have achieved this so far is to place an intermediate entity in the relationship that can hold an output and input name. Then an entity can cycle through its inputs/outputs to find the right relationship when required. Is there a better way?
Effectively I am trying to provide a generic entity that can have any number of relationships with other generic entity.
Apologies if my description isn't the clearest.

Firstly thank you for your response. I certainly have a two-way too-many relationship in mind. But if a widget has 2 other widgets linked to its Inputs relationship what is the best way of determining which input is supplying, say, 'Age' or 'Years Service' when both may have this property but I'm only interested in a specific value from each?
I'm as confused as Joshua - which tells me that it may be that you haven't got a clear picture of what you're trying to achieve or that it is somewhat complex (both?).
My best guess is that you have something like:
Entity Widget
Attributes:
identifier
Relationships
outputWidgets <<->> Widget
inputWidgets <<->> Widget
(where as per standard a ->> is a to-many relationship and <<->> is a to-many relationship with a to-many reverse relationship).
So each widget will be storing the set of widgets that it has as outputs and the set of widgets it has as inputs.
Thus a specific widget maintains a set of inputWidgets and outputWidgets. Each of these relationships is also reversed so you can - for any of the widgets in the input or output - see that your widget is in their list of inputs or outputs.
This is bloody ugly though.
I think your question is how to achieve the above while labelling a relationship. You mention you want to have a string identifier (unique?) for each relationship.
You could do this via:
Where you create a new widgetNamedRelationship for each double sided relationship. Note that I'm assuming that every relationship is double sided.
Then for each widget you have a set of named inputs and named outputs. This also allows for widgets to be attached to themselves but only of there are separate input and output busses.
So then for your example "age" in your implementation class for Widget instance called aWidget you'd have something like:

There really is no better way if you want to be able to take full advantage of the conveniences of fast and efficient in-store querying. It's unclear what you're asking in your additional comments, which I suppose is why you haven't gotten any answers yet.
Keep in mind Core Data supports many-to-many relationships without a "join table."
If Widget has many Inputs or Outputs (which I suspect could be the same entity), then a many-to-many, two-way relationship (a relationship with an inverse, in Core Data parlance) between Widget and Input is all you need. Then all you need to do is see if your Input instance is in the Widget instance's -inputs or if a Widget instance is in the Input instance's -widgets.

ORM question - JPA

I'm reading Pro JPA 2. The book talks begins by talking about ORM in the first few pages.
It talks about mapping a single Java class named Employee with the following instance variables - id,name,startDate, salary.
It then goes on to the issue of how this class can be represented in a relational database and suggests the following scheme.
table A: emp
id - primary key
startDate
table B: emp_sal
id - primary key in this table, which is also a foreign key referencing the 'id' column in table A.
It thus seems to suggest that persisting an Employee instance to the database would require operations on two(multiple) tables.
Should the Employee class have an instance variable 'salary' in the first place?
I think it should possibly belong to a separate class (Class salary maybe?) representing salary and thus the example doesn't seem very intuitive.
What am I missing here?
First, the author explains that there are multiples ways to represent a class in a database: sometimes the mapping of a class to a table is straightforward, sometimes you don't have a direct correspondence between attributes and columns, sometimes a single class is represented by multiples tables:
In scenario (C), the EMP table has

With such a mapping, even a single
store operation for the Employee class
now requires inserts or updates to two

So even storing the data from a single class in a database can be a challenging exercise.
Then, he describes how relationships are different. At the object level model, you traverse objects via their relations. At the relational model level, you use foreign keys and joins (sometimes via a join table that doesn't even exist at the object model level).
Inheritance is another "problem" and can be "simulated" in various ways at the relational model level: you can map an entire hierarchy into a single table, you can map each concrete class to its own table, you can map each class to its own table.
In other words, there is no direct and unique correspondence between an object model and a relational model. Both rely on different paradigms and the fit is not perfect. The difference between both is known as the impedance mismatch, which is something ORM have to deal with (allowing the mapping between an object model and the many possible representations in a relation model). And this is what the whole section you're reading is about. This is also what you missed :)

Setting up a "to-many" relationship value dependency for a transient Core Data attribute

I've got a relatively complicated Core Data relationship structure and I'm trying to figure out how to set up value dependencies (or observations) across various to-many relationships. Let me start out with some basic info. I've got a classroom with students, assignments, and grades (students X assignments). For simplicity's sake, we don't really have to focus much on the assignments yet.
StudentObj <--->> ScoreObj <<---> AssignmentObj
Each ScoreObj has a to-one relation with the StudentObj and the AssignmentObj.
ScoreObj has real attributes for the numerical grade, the turnInDate, and notes.
AssignmentObj.scores is the set of Score objects for that assignment (N = all students).
AssignmentObj has real attributes for name, dueDate, curveFunction, gradeWeight, and maxPoints.
StudentObj.scores is the set of Score objects for that student (N = all assignments).
StudentObj also has real attributes like name, studentID, email, etc.
StudentObj has a transient (calculated, not stored) attribute called gradeTotal.
This last item, gradeTotal, is the real pickle. it calculates the student's overall semester grade using the scores (ScoreObj) from all their assignments, their associated assignment gradeWeights, curves, and maxPoints, and various other things.
This gradeTotal value is displayed in a table column, along with all the students and their individual assignment grades. Determining the value of gradeTotal is a relatively expensive operation, particularly with a large class, therefore I want to run it only when necessary. For simplicity's sake, I'm not storing that gradeTotal value in the core data model. I don't mind caching it somewhere, but I'm having a bitch of a time determining where and how to best update that cache.
I need to run that calculation for each student whenever any value changes that affects their gradeTotal. If this were a simple to-one relationship, I know I could use something like keyPathsForValuesAffectingGradeTotal ... but it's more like a many-to-one-to-many relationship. Does anyone know of an elegant (and KVC correct) solution? I guess I could tear through all those score and assignment objects and tell them to register their students as observers. But this seems like a blunt force approach.

In addition you should not make the dependent attribute transient, as it makes your context "dirty" (unsaved changes) already after recalculating all values after loading
