I have a problem where all fonts come out too dim. Is there any thing I can do to get a different
look and feel from the pdfs?
My tex file looks like
\documentclass[a4paper,twoside]{article}`
\usepackage{graphics}
\usepackage{color}
\usepackage{hyperref}
\usepackage{multirow}
\usepackage{longtable}
\usepackage{fullpage}
\usepackage[pdftex]{graphicx}
\usepackage{fancyhdr}
\oddsidemargin 0cm
\evensidemargin 0cm
\pagestyle{fancy}
\renewcommand{\headrulewidth}{0.0pt}
\rfoot{Raval, Ketan R -13223}
\textwidth 15.5cm
\topmargin -1cm
\parindent 0cm
\textheight 26.5cm
\parskip 1mm
\begin{document}
\fontencoding{\encodingdefault}
\renewcommand{\familydefault}{\sfdefault}
\fontshape{\shapedefault}
\selectfont
So how can I improve my overall look and feel of the pdf?
Thanks
Maybe you don't like Computer Modern Roman? Try a different type, like Palatino. You can vary the number points of the type to give it a heavier feel, say by using 12pt fonts.
Otherwise, I agree with noviceoof, everything with your .tex file looks perfectly standard. It's just about possible that Latex's font path is finding fonts you don't like, but I would try different fonts before testing this.
You could try different document classes (book, report, letter). What do you mean with "coming too dim"?
Have a look at
http://www.tug.org/pracjourn/2006-1/schmidt/schmidt.pdf
If you just want to change your font, check out http://www.tug.dk/FontCatalogue/
LaTeX actually has quite a few nice fonts :P
Verify if you have installed cm-super package. Without it Computer Modern font looks dim in output pdf.

I have some cell texts in a BIRT report which do not flow as nicely as I hoped.
For example,
The text is Long value resultwithaverylongname whichcannotbreak and I had hoped that it would be displayed like this:
Long value
resultwithaverylongname
whichcannotbreak
The render options are as follows:
renderOptions.setOutputFormat(IPDFRenderOption.OUTPUT_FORMAT_PDF);
renderOptions.setOption(IPDFRenderOption.PAGE_OVERFLOW, IPDFRenderOption.OUTPUT_TO_MULTIPLE_PAGES);
renderOptions.setOption(IPDFRenderOption.PDF_TEXT_WRAPPING, true);
renderOptions.setOption(IPDFRenderOption.PDF_WORDBREAK, true);
It seems to me that my desired output is physically possible but I don't know why BIRT does not break on a whitespace and breaks in the middle of the word.
I am using BIRT 4.16 (from Sourceforge). The texts contain normal whitespace (no non-breakable spaces) and are displayed via a data object.
3.Sep.21
I now have an example project which I am trying to commit to Github. In the meantime here is a screenshot showing breaks which look good and others which are not...
The git repo is here: https://github.com/pramsden/test.wordbreak
If the text "resultwithaverylongname" physically fits, then you are right:
BIRT should not break it in the middle of the word.
Your renderOptions seem right (depending of what BIRT version you are using).
At first glance this looks like a bug.
But: In German language, we often have quite long words, and I've created a lot of (complex) PDF reports with BIRT, but I never saw this issue.
So I guess it is a tiny silly detail which causes this.
Just to double-check:
Are the spaces between "Long", "value", "result..." normal spaces (0x20)? or non-breaking spaces?
Which BIRT release are you using?
Are you using a data item or a dynamic text item and if so, is it HTML or plain text?
Can you create a reproducible simple test case and post the rptdesign file somewhere?
well i don use BIRT , but try to use (\n),
in my case I use PDFFlow library to generate pdf docs, and to make a line-break i just use \n
this is a simple example code to create a pdf file and use line break
var DocumentBuilder.New()
.AddSection()
.AddParagraphToSection("Hello world! \n go to the next line")
.ToDocument()
.Build("Result.PDF");
try it and tell me if it works
I have images with people tagging information in xml format. I wish to edit this information and also add it to pictures that do not yet have it. By looking at the xml I assume it is based on the people tagging used in the microsoft imaging component.
I haven't quite understood the format, but I understood it sof far, that I can alter or gemerate the xml, I just do not know where to write it in the image. I am probably just doing some stupid mistake, because I am not experienced with these image metadatas. So if you think I'm just on the wrong track and that can be done much simpler, please tell me.
In those images that already contain this xml, I can use search and replace to update the xml. However I have a lot of pictures that do not yet contain that information and I do not know where I should write it to inside the image.
Images that already contain this information can be read with exiftool as follows:
exiftool -xmp -b existingTags.JPG
The result is the following xml:
<?xpacket begin="" id="W5M0MpCehiHzreSzNTczkc9d"?> <x:xmpmeta xmlns:x="adobe:ns:meta/" x:xmptk="XMP
Core 4.4.0-Exiv2"> <rdf:RDF xmlns:rdf="http://www.w3.org/1999/02/22-rdf-syntax-ns#"> <rdf:Description rdf:about=""
xmlns:xmp="http://ns.adobe.com/xap/1.0/" xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/"
xmlns:MP="http://ns.microsoft.com/photo/1.2/" xmlns:MPRI="http://ns.microsoft.com/photo/1.2/t/RegionInfo#"
xmlns:MPReg="http://ns.microsoft.com/photo/1.2/t/Region#" xmp:Rating="0"> <dc:subject> <rdf:Bag> <rdf:li>Valeriya
</rdf:li> </rdf:Bag> </dc:subject> <MP:RegionInfo rdf:parseType="Resource"> <MPRI:Regions> <rdf:Bag> <rdf:li
MPReg:Rectangle="0.48, 0.418, 0.059333, 0.089" MPReg:PersonDisplayName="findus_l"/> </rdf:Bag> </MPRI:Regions>
</MP:RegionInfo> </rdf:Description> </rdf:RDF> </x:xmpmeta> <?xpacket end="w"?>
However I cannot write the information using exiftool. When I ran this command, it simply reads the information again, instead of writing the contents of the file to the image:
exiftool -xmp<=alteredXMP.txt existingTags.JPG
A bit of research has shown me, that exiftool can only write specific xmp tags, and the people tagging tags from windows imaging component do not seem to be part of this.
Where in the image file should I write the information? Can I somehow find this spot programmatically and then just insert the xml there?
I am using Kotlin as programming language but I don't mind having to call command line functions or other programs.
Background: I have a Synology Diskstation and use the included software called photo station. The photo station supports tagging of people on the images and uses this given format. I like the photo station in many ways, but the face recognition is bad, so I want to use my own but have photo station be able to read it.
The data you are trying to write is part of the Microsoft Region Structure. XMP Structured data is a complex subject but you should be able to add the data with exiftool by writing region names to the RegionPersonDisplayName tag and the region dimensions to the RegionRectangle. Using the data in your example, the command would be:
exiftool -RegionPersonDisplayName=findus_l -RegionRectangle="0.48, 0.418, 0.059333, 0.089" /path/to/files
If you have to write multiple regions, you can just add them on, but you must keep names and the matching dimensions in the same order. For example
exiftool -RegionPersonDisplayName=findus_l -RegionRectangle="0.48, 0.418, 0.059333, 0.089" -RegionPersonDisplayName="John Smith" -RegionRectangle="0.37645533, 0.04499886, 0.35111009, 0.26633097" /path/to/files
These commands would overwrite any existing region data. If you are adding new names without overwriting, you would change the equal signs to PlusEqual +=.
I only want to keep the page number at the bottom and nothing header.But using the following commands I am still getting chapter name and section in the header
\pagestyle{fancy}
\renewcommand\headrulewidth{0pt}
\lhead{}\chead{}\rhead{}
\cfoot{\vspace*{1.5\baselineskip}\thepage}
Thanks in advance
\pagestyle{plain} should take care of that. For single pages \thispagestyle{plain}
http://www.ctex.org/documents/packages/layout/fancyhdr.pdf
The fancyhdr doc explains the problem.
Some LATEX commands, like \chapter, use the \thispagestyle command to automatically switch
to the plain page style, thus ignoring the page style currently in effect. To customize even such
pages you must redefine the plain pagestyle.
And it suggests
\fancypagestyle{plain}{%
\fancyhf{} % clear all header and footer fields
\fancyfoot[C]{\bfseries \thepage} % except the center
\renewcommand{\headrulewidth}{0pt}
\renewcommand{\footrulewidth}{0pt}}
I'm pretty new to using LyX, but have looked around this forum, as well as others and haven't found anyone else who has encountered this problem.
The issue is that, when I click on the 'eyes' to preview my document in .pdf form, there are the two numbered sections with the corresponding body text, but my title, abstract, and keywords, as well as the 'new page' formatting, are all missing; the two sections are at the top of the page as though they had never been included.
Some pertinent information:
LyX has recently been installed (last couple of weeks)
I'm running OSX 10.9.5
My version of LyX is 2.1.3
I'm using the Elsevier document class
The following is the TeX source:

Edit1: After adding \begin{frontmatter}{} and \end{frontmatter}{} before the title and after the keywords, things seem to be working (ie. the title, keywords, abstract and authors are all working) -- does the Elsevier document class force this to be used when denoting these items?
as suggested in the link below:
In the pulldown menu where you set your title text to be the Title, there's entries for BeginFrontmatter and EndFrontmatter. You need to put the first before your title and the second after your keywords.

I've finally gotten a C# project loaded as a PowerShell module, and am able to convert a PDF to text, sort of.
Some of my PDFs seem to convert fine, others get cut off at the end, and some of them just simply give me output like this:

I've checked the properties of the PDF files i'm testing with, and I can't find anything that sticks out as the reason a PDF outputs gibberish like above.
Can someone please give me some ideas on what else to look for and/or change?
