I'm interested in writing a plugin for OS X to support multiple operations on highlighted text in the right click context menu. The operations are simple enough that I could write them by myself. I've looked at automator's "Copy to Clipboard" action, but it requires some text input first. The "Get contents of Clipboard" action will make my operations require the highlighted text to first be copied to the clipboard.
So the question is simple: how do I access the system wide highlighted text buffer? Or is this strictly off limits?
Thanks!
There's no such thing as "the system wide highlighted text buffer"; just selecting text doesn't move it to a central location like the clipboard. And since you can have text selected in multiple windows at once, it's not really clear what that would even do.
Have you considered using the services menu? It's specifically designed to allow third party apps to provide operations for users to perform on selected text.

I’m not sure what are these called:
I mean the Show code with my wire stats, Show Memory indicator, etc..
Basically, I’m mostly interested so this autocomplete menu would only show files, or at the very least would prioritise files. How can this be achieved?
I’m in version 2022.2.1.
That popup is called Search Everywhere and you are on an "All" tab that includes combined results from Classes, Files, Symbols, Actions etc.
Either manually switch to the desired tab (using a mouse or by hitting Tab needed number of times) or invoke this popup for the desired search from the start. For that just use the shortcut for Navigate | File... (Ctrl + Shift + N here on Windows keymap).

Found the solution.
These things are called Actions, and the can be disabled in menu that appears after clicking the small funnel icon in the top right:
I tested, these changes seem to 'survive' a restart.
Yes, at the moment it is remembered only during the session.

(P.S. The same happens with Find in Files popup (IDEA-143972) and a few others similar popups as well)
I've written LabView code for a locking system.
The lock has a motion timer that relies on input from a numeric control. I've added a script file reader that needs to be able to change that timer value. Using a selector, I can switch between values, but I'd like it to update the value in the control, rather than override it, so that I can see it on the screen.
How can this be accomplished?
This is currently how I switch between the scripted version and the direct numeric input from the control:
So how can I get the script value to update the control box or is that not possible...?
Do you mean something like this? I created a little vi to demonstrate how the control is updated.
In most cases "property nodes" are the way to go. Every control has a lot of different options to chose from and usually if you look through the properties you will find what you're looking for :)
A little hint:
If you want to add "code" to your question so that other users can test it, you can create a .png file. To do this, you need to select the parts of the vi that you want to share, and click on "Edit > Create VI Snippet from Selection". Then you save that generated .png and upload it here as a picture. Then others can drag&drop it into their block diagram.
Important: Check the .png before uploading and make sure that you're not accidentally posting sensitive data of your company.
I am learning French. Every time I use the Force Click on my Mac on a word I don't know, I get a dictionary entry and a translation to English.
But when I want to translate a whole sentence, I have to open Google Translate to do so. (1. Open Google Translate. 2. Copy sentence 3. Paste Sentence) It is pretty annoying to do that 20-30 times a day.
So is there a way to expand the capabilities of Force Click in Safari (or in the best case, in every application which allows "Look Up")?
Let me worry about how I can translate the sentences.
I am open for any kind of creative solution.
Here is the standard pop-up when I force touch
I don't think there is a documented way to achieve this on a force click, but you may want to look at Services.
Basically, you can create an application that provides a service, select some text, and then choose your application's Service menu item from the Services submenu in your Application Name menu (the one in bold where "Hide" etc. are).
The service will then receive a copy of the selection (in an NSPasteboard) and can do whatever it wants with that, or even change it.
I picked vb.net for this question since it's the only prgramming language I am fairly familair with, but if C++ or something else is more suited for this, I am willing to learn something new.
What I am trying to do is:
Retrieve text from database (this already works in vb.net) and copy it to clipboard
Switch primary screen to the external application I want to work with (example: word or open office)
Emulate key-press Enter
Paste text and hit Enter again
Emulate key-press Ctrl and then emulate a click on a pre-defined spot on the screen (like 500pixels from left, 740pixels from top).
Save screenshot, using a second value from the database as the filename (the naming part should be easy)
Emulate another click on another pre-defined spot
Repeat for next text in database.
I wouldn't know where to start, though. I guess the most important part of what I'm trying to achieve is; switching focus to an external application and emulate keypresses and mouse clicks on it.
use http://www.autohotkey.com/
write a console app to get the value from the database
1 - get autohotkey to run the console app and put the return into the clipboard
then continue as described in your list.
My employer has purchased a third-party tool, OfficeConverter from Conveter Technology that automates the conversion / repair of Office 2003-formatted files to Office 2007 format. This tool also highly automates the translation / change in macro / VBA code requirements between Office 2003 and 2007 formats.
My problem is that during this conversion the tool is opening the targeted Office product, say Excel and is then opening the target user file (ie. Report.xls) and is then examining any VBA / macro code for change requirements. The problem is that IF the Excel file code is dependent upon some external tool like an .OCX file and if that tool doesn't exist on the PC that I'm performing this action on, Excel will pop up a message that the Object has not been found, stopping the entire conversion process (thousands of files in a row) until someone comes along and MANUALLY clicks the appropriate button to close the dialogue box.
I figured that creating a small watching application in VB6 (hey, I'm old and my skills are too) could sit on the same PC and watch for these dialogue boxes and, depending on the specific message, click the appropriate button via the SendMessage API call.
The problem is that I haven't been able to get SendMessage to actually PUSH the button for me, I've tried sending it the Return key value (vbKeyReturn) or even the Space key (vbKeySpace) but the action never results in the dialogue box closing like it should. I can get the focus to tab between whichever buttons on the dialogue box are enabled, but that is about it.
I've attempted to use SendKeys, but that is far less reliable and strongly discouraged in the current documentation that I've come across.
Any suggestions? :)
If you have the hWnd for the button, and the machine is unattended, you can easily use MouseEvent to move the cursor over the button and click it. This sample includes a drop-in ready module that'll do the dirty work for you given just the window handle:
http://vb.mvps.org/samples/MouseEvent
Otherwise, the most straightforward way is probably to just send WM_LBUTTONDOWN and WM_LBUTTONUP sequentially.
EDIT: If you "just want to get it done" take Jim's advice and try Gary Chanson's Window Demon tool.
Take a look at this utility "Window Demon" by Gary Chanson
Karl: how quickly we forget our pals!
I would suggest taking a look at AutoIt.
It is perfect for this task, look for a window with a particular text on it and click a button.
Runs in the system tray as a standalone application.
