WCF with Http Basic Authentication - wcf

I'm building a webservice that needs to be accessible to a variety of potential platforms, including a number of older ASP and ASP .NET applications. After some research, I settled on a WCF service with both a REST (webHttpBinding) and SOAP (wsHttpBinding) endpoint (that way, I can support a wide range of platforms and still make the .NET coders happy).
For security, I'm using SSL and HTTP Authentication Basic against my own database of username/passwords. So I've written an HttpModule to handle the usernames and passwords and check for SSL. Now, the REST setup is working perfectly, but I'm having problems with the SOAP endpoint. No matter what settings I use, the SOAP client never sends me a WWW-Authorization header that I can use to authenticate. I'm assuming that setting something like <message clientCredentialType="UserName" /> should tell WCF that I expect an Authorization header, and that information will be picked up by Visual studio (or whatever client) when it creates a web reference. Perhaps I'm just being hopelessly naive.
So to summarize the question: is there any way that I can tell WCF to send me a WWW-Authorization header (ie, an HTTP basic header) along with the soap messages?

ASP.NET Client Application Services Authentication and WCF

I have a WPF application that uses Client Application Services to allow authentication (username/password logon) against a related web application that uses Forms authentication and the SqlMembershipProvider/SqlProfileProvider/SqlRoleProvider. This all works and I can reliably validate a user/password combination.
The WPF application also calls a number of WCF services that are exposed by the same web application as is used for the CAS authentication. I now want to be able to pass through the authentication details (from Client Application Services) to the WCF services in order that I can identify the user that was authenticated within those services. I also need to be able to prevent the WCF services from being used if no authentication has taken place.
I have found a couple of .NET 3.5 examples where CAS authentication is used against .asmx web services, or authentication is provided against WCF Data Services which does not use ClientBase and has authentication facilities built in, but I cannot find any examples with pure WCF. Can anybody point me toward instruction that will enable this scenario? I am using .NET 4.0 for this project.
I have also found this stackoverflow question but again this is answered for .asmx web services and not for WCF.
The closest I have gotten involves the creation of an OperationContextScope and then copying the cookie header from the ClientFormsIdentity object to an HttpRequestMessageProperty and adding this to the OutgoingMessageProperties of the current OperationContext. I then call one or more methods of the service within the lifespan of the OperationContextScope. Thing is, when I then get to the WCF service, I still cannot see anything that resembles authentication in such a way as I can identify the original user. This methodology has been taken from various examples but I am obviously missing a step at the WCF end.

In my binding, I specified allowCookies="true".
According to Wiktor Zychla, "setting the AllowCookies property on a BasicHttpBinding to true turns on the automatic cookie management" - this means that any attempt to set a cookie in code will be ignored and this is what I was doing.

Using WCF to create a RESTful Web Service that requires authentication and uses JSON as input/output format

I want to port an existing ASP.NET Web Service to WCF so the resulting Web Service (1) is RESTful, (2) uses JSON as its request/response format, (3) has a custom authentication mechanism.
After a lot of googling, random coding, and wanting to hit my head against the wall, I found that...
A webHttpBinding has to be used to make the Web Service RESTful. But...
webHttpBinding does not support HTTPS hosts.
webHttpBinding does not support UserName authentication.
webHttpBinding does not even support message security.
An endpoint behavior with <enableWebScript/> has to be used to support ASP.NET AJAX. But...
What is "ASP.NET" AJAX?
What if I want to consume the Web Service using "regular" AJAX?
And, most importantly...
Can WCF do what I want to do in first place?
If not, what other platforms could I use?
I've written WCF service that does both SOAP and REST with XML and JSON, and custom auth. I've pushed the custom authentication into HTTP module, which does basic auth over https. See Custom HTTP Basic Authentication for ASP.NET Web Services on .NET 3.5/VS 2008 and WCF POX, JSON and SOAP Coexist.
In the setup you describe, the web servier (i.e. IIS) will be responsible for encryption (HTTPS) and authentication (e.g. basic authentiction). IIS can be extended with a custom authentication mechanism (just google for "IIS module handler").
It's a bit strange that it has to be delegated to IIS and is not part of WCF. But it's no problem at all.

Adding an HTTP RPC Service using webHttpBinding for an Existing SOAP Service implemented with WCF?

I've been told that adding an HTTP RPC web service given an existing SOAP web service implemented with WCF is as simple as adding a webHttpBinding and a couple of attributes.
I'd be grateful if someone could show how to implement such an HTTP RPC web service using webHttpBinding given an existing SOAP web service that is based on WCF. It would be super helpful if the answer could show all the code for both services and even more helpful if the example is self-contained so that someone could install for testing without having to know anything about either. FYI, while I have programmed on the .NET stack it's been ~5 years and today all my work is on LAMP so I'm just not familiar enough with the latest generation .NET stack or it's current runtime environments.
My specific use-case is a set of two (2) services where one responds with an AuthToken and then a second service where I pass the AuthToken and Username, Password and another bit of information and the response back is a user object with attributes like 'first_name', 'last_name', etc. Ideally I'd be able to access those same services via two different URLs and the responses I would get back would be in JSON format.
Note I'm looking for an example to be installed by someone else who programs on the .NET stack but isn't highly motivated to do won't much extra work. I'm trying to get an HTTP-based web service I can use without having to add a SOAP client to the existing PHP framework I am using and I think if I could get a concise example of how to add such an HTTP RPC web service the .NET programmer might be happily willing to add the HTTP RPC web service for my needs. FYI, the web service in question was developed specifically for this use case and is not part of a standard set of SOAP services documented for and in use by lots of other developers.

Which to use...REST, ASMX, WSE or WCF?

I have a Windows Service which performs a certain function, and then needs to send that information off to a webservice for processing. The webservice is hosted by a remote web application. I am trying to ascertain the best way to call the webservice(s) as each web application might be only 2.0, or 3.5 etc. In my windows service, I am defining each "client" in the app.config, e.g.

The web application must implement two web services that are required for my windows service to run, however not sure the best way to implement the "rules" for the web application.

I'll try and rephrase..
The Windows Service runs every 30 seconds and obtains a list of information. The service supports multiple "clients" as shown above. When each client process is run, the data is collected and is then needed to be sent to the supporting web application.
The windows service does not know what to do with the data, it is just sending it. Each web application for a client would be in different locations, and could possibly be built in 2.0, 3.5, PHP, etc. All the windows service cares about, is that when it performs its processing for a client, it is able to send the data to the webservice location defined in the app.config of the windows service.
What I'm trying to determine is how to connect to the webservice (which I'm leaning towards WCF, however Basic or WS not sure), and what rules need to be defined for the web application in how to build the response.
If the Windows service is to support php applications etc, WSHttpBinding would not be an option, which would mean BasicHttpBinding would then work. The other thing to decide is whether or not to utilise a RESTful service or SOAP service.

I'm not really clear on what you are doing.
It seems like you have 3 things: A Windows Service, and then a web service, hosted in a web app.
I think your question is, what to use, REST, ASMX, WSE or WCF, when interconnecting the Windows Service app with the remote web service.
ASMX, WSE and WCF are alternative programming models for the web service. REST is not a programming model. It is not like the other three.
ASMX and WSE will require that you use Web services and SOAP.
WCF can allow you to use Web services and SOAP, REST (XML or JSON) over HTTP, or a binary format over TCP, among other options.
Because it is flexible and current technology, I'd recommend WCF. ASMX is now termed "legacy technology" by Microsoft. Doesn't mean it won't work, but it will not get updates. (Much like WinForms versus WPF). WSE is no longer in mainstream support, as far as I know. For these reasons, I wouldn't recommend starting a new project on WSE, nor on ASMX.
WCF is more general than ASMX and can seem more complicated, for that reason. But once you make some choices and zero in on what you want (for example choose HTTP and REST, or choose binary and TCP), it's more powerful. WCF can be used as the programming model on both the client or sender (in your case, the Windows Service, I guess) and/or on the server (the web service hosted in the web app).
Using WCF on the client side does not imply you must use it on the server side, and vice versa. On the other hand, if you control the source code on both ends, I would recommend using WCF on both sides.
As for "how to implement the rules for the web app" - I don't understand what you are asking there. Maybe if you are more specific on the question there, someone will be able to help out.
Update: Based on your additional explanation, I'm going to suggest you look at the REST stuff in WCF for .NET 3.5. In PHP it's very easy to implement a REST-style service, and with WCF, the same is true for .NET. Now in your case the Windows service is the client and it is sending out a request, an update request, to various servers that reside on your customers' networks. According to REST principles, I'd make those outbound requests PUTs or POSTs, depending on the semantics of the call.
Then you could ship some example service code to your (uppercase) Clients, to get them started on building what they need to receive your outbound PUT/POST messages.
Security is a concern though. You didn't mention it at all, which is surprising. Security is not one of those things best deferred, so that you "add it on later". You should think about it early - it may affect the protocol choices you make. For example, if you need to mutually authenticate the clients and servers (the latter at your "uppercase" Clients' networks), then you may want to go with SOAP, which gives you good options on the protocol side for security. Secure Web services extensions (WS-Sec, etc) are well supported in WCF, but not sure about the status of this capability in PHP.

Basic Authentication with WCF REST service to something other than windows accounts?

Is there a clean way to expose a WCF REST service that requires basic authentication, but where we handle the actual validation of the username/password ourselves? It seems that when you tell WCF in config that you want to use basic authentication, it forces you to turn on basic authentication in IIS and IIS can only do basic authentication against window accounts.
The only hack we have found is to lie to WCF and tell it there is no security on the service and then do authentication outside of the WCF stack using a generic IHttpModule (which has a proprietary config file to indicate which URLs have which authentication/authorization requirements).
It seems like there should be a better way. Anyone have one?

See Custom Basic Authentication for RESTful services. Pablo's approach uses the interceptor functionality that is provided via the REST starter kit to solve the problem. If you do not want to depend on the REST starter kit, then you can create your own service host and use the inteceptor functionality provided.
If you host it on IIS, using custom http module is the way to go. You can bring over the principal over to WCF side to do code access security. See HTTP Basic Authentication against Non-Windows Accounts in IIS/ASP.NET (Part 3 - Adding WCF Support). Also see Custom HTTP Basic Authentication for ASP.NET Web Services on .NET 3.5/VS 2008.
If you are not using IIS, you should be able to implement userNameAuthentication. See Finally! Usernames over Transport Authentication in WCF.
Yes absolutely there is a way. You need to configuring a custom userNamePasswordValidationMode value for your service and point it to a class with an overridden method that can inspect and validate the credentials provided. When making a RESTful call, these credentials when using Basic authentication in its proper form should be in the request header. With this custom method you can inspect the credentials and then authenticate the client to your service. No Windows accounts or domain even needed.
The nice thing is you can then take that security context to the next level and provide fine-grained authrization at the method level. You might have instances where a large pool of clients are able to access the service, but not all methods within (i.e. paid clients vs. unpaid). In this case you can also provide authorization at the method level as well if needed.
Below is a step-by-step solution (with too many steps to embed) by me that contains both the needed configuration and security required to have a complete solution. The problem is often Basic authentication is used without securing the Transport with a SSL certificate and this is bad. Make sure to follow all the steps and you will implement Basic authentication without the need of any type of Windows accounts or configuration on your WCF RESTful based service.
