Alternative to DLL's as objects (dynamically replaceable objects) - dll

I have an application that uses many different .NET managed DLL's as objects (each DLL implements a common interface). Each DLL also has a version number in the file name.
Suppose I create the object "Shape~01.dll." The application will use that DLL but it can't be replaced while the application is running. So, if I want to "upgrade" the shape dll I have to create "Shape~02.dll" and the application has to dynamically search for and load the newest dll everytime a shape is created and/or the user has to restart the application. It get's worse, each dll depends on the main .exe thus has to be rebuilt with the main .exe.
Is there an easier method to have dynamically "replaceable" objects?

Well, this isn't the best solution (still thinking about it), but you can unload dll files which will allow them to be replaced. That might be a quick stopgap solution until you come up with a better idea.

You don't mention which language/platform you are trying to accomplish this in, so I will answer for the .NET Framework.
If you want to do it the hard way look at Shadow Assemblies, this is the method that ASP.NET uses to keep the site updateable though it is using the files.
For a much easier method look at the new System.Addin namespace, this uses Shadow Assemblies under the hood and should do what you want.

Instead of polling when creating an object, why not just request notification from the system when the file system changes?
The class is System.IO.FileSystemWatcher in.NET.
For native code there are a few ways to watch a folder, but IANAND (I am not a native developer ;).
Although having said those things, you probably want to rethink the reason you need to change your objects so frequently, because it will probably take a lot of work to make it work.
You used the dynamic tag, so maybe you should try a dynamic language? :)

Referencing Two dll's with same simple name

I'm working on a Solidworks Addin using VB.NET that utilizes the Solidworks API and CAMWorks API.
Basically, Solidworks has integrated a free version of CAMWorks dubbed "SolidworksCAM". The API dll reference for CAMWorks and SolidworksCAM are different, each with a unique GUID, but maintaining the same simple name of "Interop.CAMWorksLib.dll". The API functions are 100% the same, just each software ships with a different GUID for their API. This GUID ties back to the COM assembly loaded in Solidworks, so if Solidworks has SolidworksCAM loaded and my addin is complied with the CAMWorks API reference it will fail to retrieve the COM object.
How can I achieve compatibility between these two APIs without having two projects? Is it even possible? Thanks!
Whenever I post a question to a board it seems like I always solve it soon after.
For future reference, I used Reflection to dynamically load the Dlls. Below is some more detailed information.
I put the Dlls in two different folders in my project and set them to Copy. I then used Assembly.LoadFile to load the dll and get its assembly. I used this assembly to get the constructor class "CWAppClass" and fed its type into Activator.CreateInstance to get an instance of the main CWApp class. This way you can use whichever one doesn't error. Thanks for the help!
After taking advice to not use LoadFile(), i have found that there is a method in the Solidworks API that allows you to do this. By using Sldworks::GetAddInObject you can get the addin object for whichever addin you choose. Then you can use the CAMWORKSADDINLib to interact with this. Thanks for the suggestion, this it the perfect solution for my problem.

Difference between MEF and Refrenced dll

I am working on a silverlight project and I am using MEF to download xap file of other silverlight project and use its pages and functions in my main Project.
I can do the same thing using referencing dll of that project into my main project.
So I want to know what is the difference between using MEF to reusing components and Simply Adding Reference to the DLL of another project in current project? I mean that we also add reference to the project we import in our current project. Then how it is different from conventional form of component use?

First, we need to separate MEF and PRISM (since you used it in your tags).
MEF is primarily used to provide inversion of control (IoC). It makes it easy to manage dependencies your viewmodels and other classes to separate concerns and improve testability (amongst other benefits).
PRISM however is primarily designed for the following scenario: You don't know, what view goes into a specific container at compile time, and want ViewA for CustomerA, ViewB for CustomerB and so on. PRISM helps you to losely couple your regions and views in a way, so that the application can decide at runtime, what view will be displayed. Another scenario, is that administrators get one view, other users another etc. PRISM also has other features (like the event aggregator), but I'd say the former is the most important one.
Now, I'd say MEF is never a bad thing to use for a bigger project. But I'd only use PRISM, if you really need the functionality it provides, since it can be very limiting. If you don't, simply add the references as you explained and let MEF know about those assemblies with the AssemblyCatalog.
So for MEF, I'd suggest you learn about Depdendency Injection and IoC. I found this blogpost by Martin Fowler quite good. As for PRISM, get familiar with what it does, and decide if you really need it.

The two things are orthogonal activities, meaning that if you reference a dll directly you might still want to use MEF to detect the types in it - and vice versa you might grab a specific type in a dll you dynamically loaded directly (without MEF).
MEF basically finds types in dlls according to certain criteria and has a bit of convenience stuff in it to automatically populate properties and collections with such types. It can be used to make a system more decoupled and thus more maintainable. For example, a video editing software may look for all types implementing a certain interface in all known dlls to use as filters. Whether you include the filters directly as a dll or let the user download them on demand: In both cases your application becomes slightly cleaner by using MEF, since there is no hard-coded list of filters anywhere. Still, in the presence of dynamic library loading MEF is especially useful.

Create VB6 application using a class in a DLL, then swap out that DLL after build?

so my question is relatively simple, can I create VB6 application that references a class in a dll, and then substitute that dll for another at runtime?
Now my intial guess is... no chance in VB6.
So my thoughts turned to a VB.net interop dll. Could I do it in here, and then call the interop dll from the VB?
Again, my guess would be no.... but I'd be happy if someone knew differently.
The only thing that I think would actually work would be DI in .Net, but I'm limited to .net 2, or 3.5 at a big push, so I dont know if that is possible.
So for the background....
I have a dll that a specific site uses, but we dont want to ship that out to everyone. Instead, we want to build a clone dll which just has the interfaces setup so that the VB6 build will complete.
When it gets to the site that needs it, they want to replace the dummy dll, and drop in their version instead.
Note: We do use RegFreeCOM when its gets installed, so I do have the manifest files that I could play around with if needed.
Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Its a COM dll so its not statically linked to the VB6 exe, so long as the clsids and interface ids are the same in the type library for both DLLs, you can swap them around as you see fit. (If its a VB6 dll this is trivial to do with the 'binary compatibility' build option)
You could also use late binding instead and instead of making a reference directly in your VB6 code, you would create an object and then set that object to an instance.

Replacing and then stringing multiple DLLs

I'm using VB.net so keep that in mind.
I'm trying to create a program that is highly edible. Users will be able to change multiple things by just replacing the existing dlls. Kind of like a modding ability.
The new DLL shouldn't have to recreate every function though, it should only include the ones that it changes and then hook to the old dll for anything that it doesn't have. Is there a way to dynamically do this? Reference another dll (like a proxy) through yourself for anything that doesn't exist in its self?

Is it possible to use registration-free COM with HTA applications?

Since HTA applications are hosted within MSHTA.exe how does one provide a manifest? Plus I assume providing a MSHTA.exe.manifest could potentially break other HTA apps?
On Vista+, MSHTA.exe has an embedded manifest, which takes priority over external manifests, so your suggestion is not an option.
On XP/2003, yes, your suggestion would work, although it would be bad form, as is dropping files in System32 to modify the behavior of a system binary (especially make sure that any registration you put in the manifest are objects you are the only one to care about).
The proper solution, available on Win2003 and above, is to use the Microsoft.Windows.ActCtx object to instantiate your object given an explicit manifest reference.
For example:
var actCtx = WScript.CreateObject("Microsoft.Windows.ActCtx");
actCtx.Manifest = "myregfree.manifest";
var obj = actCtx.CreateObject("MyObj");
Perhaps, if this must work on XP as well, a path you may take is a combination of both solutions.

If you question is can you access a COM object without registering it on the machine, then I think the answer is a tentative yes. However the work you would need to do would be substantial and would mean implementing a lot of the low level code that most development tools provide for you as a matter of course (Delphi, .NET, JAVA). You would need to interface with the dll directly (like you would a normal dll ), query its interfaces and call your methods.
If you have C, C++ knowledge, the way COM is accessed from these languages would give you some pointers.
