I have a client-server application, in which the client communicates with the server using WCF (WCF is used both in the client and the server).
My problem is, that instantiating the auto-generated proxy in the client, in the following way:
new Service1Client() takes constantly 15.xxx seconds.
I tried to solve this problem, and came to the following results:
1) Compiling and running the same code on other computers, ends up in the same way (always 15.xxx seconds).
2) Instantiating the proxy using ChannelFactory.CreateChannel< IService1 >()
doesn't help (it gives the same result).
My guess, is that whenever the channel factory creates a channel, it tries to do something with a 15 seconds timeout, and when it fails, it continues with creation.
By the way, I use .Net 3.5 without SP1, and cannot upgrade to SP1 :(
Thanks ahead
Even though it is already outdated, it may be useful for somebody else searching for the same. Problem could be with DNS resolution problem, that might be solved in SP1. So you can check if it happens only when you use host name or also with specified IP address.
I've seen this before, where the time was being taken in looking for a proxy server. Check your WinINET (Internet Explorer) proxy settings.
My specific reason for thinking "proxy server" is that it takes 15s. 15s sounds like a nice round number for a network timeout.
Even though this is very old information I just found this issue too although I was experiencing a 7second delay on the First call to a method on the Service Client, I tracked it (in my environment) to Internet Explorer settings as stated above, but in my circumstances it wasn't a Proxy enabled, but the Automatically Detect Settings.
Connections -> Lan Settings and Automatically Detect settings was enabled.
I played with the machine.config and app.config and set
<runtime>
<generatePublisherEvidence enabled="false"/>
</runtime>
Which also made no difference.
I found this answer here and thought I'd contribute a little more information in case someone else in the future experiences something like this.
(This with a .Net 4 WCF service)

I'm about a month away developing my silverlight application (this is my first). Everything went rather smoothly until today, when out of the blue I started getting this message:
An error occurred while trying to make a request to URI 'http://localhost:2682/Services/Authentication/LoginService.svc'. This could be due to attempting to access a service in a cross-domain way without a proper cross-domain policy in place, or a policy that is unsuitable for SOAP services. You may need to contact the owner of the service to publish a cross-domain policy file and to ensure it allows SOAP-related HTTP headers to be sent. This error may also be caused by using internal types in the web service proxy without using the InternalsVisibleToAttribute attribute. Please see the inner exception for more details.
I'm using WCF Services and this issue never appeared until now.
I've added a clientdomain.xml and clientaccesspolicy.xml file to my [projectname].web folder, and re-wrote them about a 1000 different ways.
I've also used Fiddler and it shows me that the error is on both those files, the error is
[Fiddler] The socket connection to localhost failed. ErrorCode: 10061. No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it 127.0.0.1:2682
I've searched the error "10061" and it has to do with socket definition. But I couldn't find any solution to that.
Don't know if it has anything to do with it, but my "ASP.net Development Server" port is 6939.
Keep in mind that the app has NOT been deployed, so this is only happening locally. I'm using MS VS 2010 and MS SQL Server 2008.
Am I doing anything wrong or is this a silverlight issue??
On a last note, I haven't changed anything on Port, socket or service configuration. Last thing I was doing was editing a XAML file on client side and and the app started throwing me this error.
Need help, can't do anything until this is solved!!!!
Thanks.
i think you are using you app on localhost and a dynamic port is getting assigned and this port is not fixed and every run and that causes the refuse problem. if you want to fix this, create a solid url for example,
http://localhost/apps/Services/Authentication/LoginService.svc
Well, last night, just before I went to bed, I noticed something odd. In my "ServiceReferences.ClientConfig" file, the endpoint ports for each one of my services where diferent from the ones the silverlight machine used, so going on a hunch (and because I was reaching my sanity breakpoint) I decided to eliminate all my Service References and re-add them again.
I worked... go figure. Still don't know why this happened and if anyone could shed some light on the subject, I would appreciate it. It's kinda of annoying having to re-add all my services references. Right now I have only 6 of them, but in the near future they may go over 20, and if this happens again... well, it's going to be a real pain...
Thanks
to make long story as short as possible, I made a duplex WCF service, using wsdualhttpbinding, tested it on my local machine using Visual Stuido and using IIS7, thigs are working fine (i had to use windows authentication on IIS7 to make it work thu). Any way, I published the duplex service on my company network (LAN network, windows domain, IIS 6) which i used to for many WCF services (basic and ws http bindings and worked fine) and the problem is I can not get the service to work, I tried all possible configurations to the app.config and to the web.config files, still i can not make it work.. The problem is when the client start calling the duplex service It hangs and no error message or whatsoever, and after few minutes it gives me a timeout error.. there is no error at server side ( i have checked the even viewer). There is not error about port 80 or access privileges. Is there anything i am missing? anything i should take care of and i forgot? i have been awake for 20 hours trying to find a solution because i have a time line to follow or my boss will Dispose() Me..
i have tried the following:
1- I set the IsOneWay = true..
2- I run the program as admin.
3- I i set the base address to another port.. same result..
4- I used windows auth, none... same result..
5- i have tried another machine to test the client.. same result.. it hangs with no reponse.
6- I also tried running the client on windows vista, 7 and xp... same result..
7- I have played with all kind of configurations in config files and i made sure its the same on both files (app.config and web.config)..
8- I have added a static constructor in the service side to see if the service was ever reached by the client, i added few lines to add a value in the db.. and nothing was written to db.. so it was never reached..
9- Yes, when i access the service SVC page i see the page and it worked fine.. I could access the metadata as well..
10- restarting the server, restarting IIS server, Recycling AppPool...etc..
I tried all of that and many other solutions and tricks.. same result when the app is on IIS.. the strange thing is, there is no error at server side.. and i only get TimeOut error (if i get it).. While If i tried the service on the IIS installed locally it works fine.. change the config file to point to the company IIS server,,, no luck!
Is there anything i am missing??? could be something simple but i just missed it..
We have scaled-out some portions of our ASP.NET app to run on one server, and other portions to run on another server (& under a subdomain).
The two servers share (SQL Server) Session. We used this MS article to create a tiny HTTP Module to sync app domain name between the two servers (sans the cookie domain code, which can be configured in the web.config. I later found this CodeProject article which is essentially the same.)
Everything's working well, except for a small issue: deployment changes or web.config tweaks require a manual app pool recycle (the auto-recycle no longer works - instead we get the "web server is currently unavailable / hit refresh" error).
I tried moving the app domain naming code from the HTTP Module into the Application_Start section of the Global.asax (maybe this is a better place for it?) - but received the same problem.
I know that one solution is to hard-code the app name in one of the SQL Server Session stored procedures; but am a bit hesitant to do this.
Edit: The app is ASP.NET 3.5 under IIS 6.0 (thanks #Chris & #bzlm)
You should check if proper Recycling Events are turned on in IIS, maybe this can help http://support.microsoft.com/kb/332088
Update. We opened a tech support case with Microsoft about this. After a week or so of back & forth, they said they had reproduced the issue in their environment and understand the cause (a timing issue deep inside the ASP.NET internals) - but that there is no resolution that they're aware of. I complained that the HTTP module is Microsoft code, but they said that this code is under "FAST PUBLISH" terms - intended to help & advise customers; yet not warranted.
Ah well. We now just manually recycle the app pool after making a web.config change.
I have a problem running a Java (using Metro) client against a .NET STS and secured web service. However, when I run my .NET based client, it always works.
As you probably already know, when a JAX-WS client is ran, it requests metadata from the service during runtime (even though it already has ran wsimport during design time). However, it seems that this runtime metadata request is where my problem is.
The problem that I'm facing is that during the runtime requests of metadata, some WSDL's exported by my WCF service caused the Java client to just 'hang' during the mex requests. When it hangs, it doesn't even get to the point of issuing the RST request.
For example, I can get to a spot where I have 9 [OperationContract] attributes and it works. But when I add a 10th service method, it doesn't work. However, if I remove one of the 9, then it works. I know there isn't a problem with a particular method because I can mix and match and the same pattern holds.
I can't seem to deduce a pattern or reason for why some WSDL's work and some don't. I strongly doubt there is a limit to the number of service methods. However, could this be a problem with "overall complexity" with the exported WSDL?
Does anyone have any ideas? Have anyone run into this issue before?
If more information is needed, I can glady post it. I'm just trying to keep the initial post a manageable length.
I will also add that I'm running the STS and secured web serivce in .NET 4, and they are based on WIF (so I don't have to worry about security settings). My .NET client is also .NET 4. On the Java side, I'm using Netbeans 6.9.1 with Metro 2.1 running Glassfish 3. I've verified that I receive the same issue running on Metro 2.0.
Please see WSDL Requests with Metro/JAX-WS/WSIT During Runtime for a detailed answer.
Following the example given, there're chances that MaxMessageReceivedSize or MaxStringContentLength limit is reached. Have you tried increasing the values of MaxMessageReceivedSize and MaxStringContentLength for binding? You can try enabling WCF traces, there'd be a warning logged if any such limit is reached.
I have a silverlight project that calls into a wcf service. Everything works fine on my local machine.
However when I deploy to a virtual machine, with the exact same query the wcf service returns, but the result is empty.
I've tried debugging, but have not been able to get it to break in the wcf service.
Any ideas what the problem could be, or how I could go about debugging it?
Thanks
I figured out what the problem is, but am not sure what the solution is.
In my silverlight project the wcf service I am referencing is http://localhost/.../SilverlightApiService.svc
I used fiddler on my vm to see the request that was made and instead of trying to contact the above service, it was trying to contact:
http:///.../SilverlightApiService.svc
So, for some reason my machine name is getting inserted in there instead of localhost. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.
I had this exact problem when deploying to amazon ec2 - The machine name for the service was being returned in the wsdl rather than the dns.
There were a couple solutions (one involved creating static wsdl - yuck!)
But the other was creating a sort of factory pattern for the service
This thread (you can read it all, but the answers are at the bottom.)

The slight downfall with this is that although it works - if you change the location of the server, you will need to remember to update your config - Which although isn't hard, it's easy to forget to do.
Can you give us a bit more information? What kind of binding are you using? What does the service config and the client config look like? Where do you get your data from that gets returned? Could it be the service on the VM just doesn't get any data? (e.g. queries a database that just doesn't have the data requested?)
Marc
I have had that happen before. I would try this. Set you start page as the web service file and run the app. Then set the start page back to your default page. Then update all the server references in your SL project. Recompile everything and republish. This has helped me a bunch of times in the past.
I figured it out.
Basically my machine name was hard coded in my ServiceReferences.ClientConfig file in my silverlight project.
What I had to do was specify programmatically what url to use for the service reference when instantiating my service client:
System.ServiceModel.EndpointAddress address = new System.ServiceModel.EndpointAddress(new Uri
(Application.Current.Host.Source, "../WebServices/SilverlightService.svc"));
ServiceClient serviceClient = new ServiceClient("BasicHttpBinding_IService", address);
I figured out what the problem is, but am not sure what the solution is.
In my silverlight project the wcf service I am referencing is http://localhost/.../SilverlightService.svc
I used fiddler on my vm to see the request that was made and instead of trying to contact the above service, it was trying to contact:
http:///.../SilverlightService.svc
So, for some reason my machine name is getting inserted in there instead of localhost. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.
