Symbian S60 - Multiple connections with a single connection dialog - singleton

My application needs up to 3 simultaneous download connections. I am currently using a (slightly altered) CWebClient class provided in the Carbide UI framework, however using multiple instances of this for each connection prompts me multiple types to "select access point"
An RSocketServ and an RConnection object exist in the class, these appear to be the things that open the access point. Would it be a good enough solution to make these static objects (singleton) so the access point is only called once?
Any one have any experience/thoughts?

Just in case you wonder, I am using S60 3rd ed. FP2 v1.1

RConnection should be the class that triggers the access point selection dialog.
If you write your own code, get one instance of RSocketServ and 3 instances of RSocket. That should be enough. The access point selection dialog will only occur when the connection is established, which will happen only once until you hit a non-coverage area or your downloads time out.

The other way is to suppress "Select Access Point" dialog. You can do it by using CIntConnectionInitiator to establish a connection. Although this class isn't documented there is a bunch of examples on forum.nokia.com.

Roll your own accesspoint (AP) selector and store the AP ID .
Then use TCommDbConnPref to set AP ID and suppress the dialog.

Is it possible to write a plugin for Glimpse's existing SQL tab?
I'm trying to log my SQL queries and the currently available extensions don't support our in-house SQL libary. I have written a custom plugin which logs what I want, but it has limited functionality and it doesn't integrate with the existing SQL tab.
Currently, I'm logging to my custom plugin using a single helper method inside my DAL's base class. This function looks takes the SqlCommand and Duration in order to show data on my custom tab:

This works well on my 'custom' tab but unfortunately means I don't get metrics shown on Glimpse's HUD:
Is there a way I can provide Glimpse directly with the info it needs (in terms of method names, and parameters) so it displays natively on the SQL tab?
The following advise is based on the fact that you can't use DbProviderFactory and you can't use a proxied SqlCommand, etc.
The data that appears in the "out-of-the-box" SQL tab is based on messages of given types been published through our internal Message Broker (see below on information on this). Because of the above limitations in your case, to get things lighting up correctly (i.e. your data showing up in HUD and the SQL tab), you will need to simulate the work that we do under the covers when we publish these messages. This shouldn't be that difficult and once done, should just work moving forward.
If you have a look at the various proxies we have here you will be above to see what messages we publish in what circumstances. Here are some highlights:

Now that you have an idea of what messages we are expecting and how we generate them, as long as you pass in the right data when you publish those messages, everything should just light up - if you are interested here is the code that looks for the messages that you will be publishing.
Message Broker: If you at the GlimpseConfiguration here you will see how to access the Broker. This can be done statically if needed (as we do here). From here you can publish the messages you need.
Helpers: For generating some of the above messages, you can use the helpers inside the Support class here. I would have shifted all the code for publishing the actual messages to this class, but I didn't think there would be too many people doing what you are doing.
Update 1
Starting point: With the above approach you shouldn't need to write your own plugin. You should just be able to access the broker GlimpseConfiguration.GetConfiguredMessageBroker() (make sure you check if its null, which it is if Glimpse is turned off, etc) and publish your messages.
I would imagine that you would put the inspection that leverages the broker and published the messages, where ever you have knowledge of the information that needs to be collected (i.e. inside your custom lib). Normally this would require references inside your lib to glimpse (which you may not want), so to protect against this, from your lib, you would call a proxy (which could be another VS proj) that has the glimpse dependency. Hence your ado lib only has references to your own code.
To get your toes wet, try just publishing a couple of fake connection and command messages. Assuming the broker you get from GlimpseConfiguration.GetConfiguredMessageBroker() isn't null, these should just show up. Then you can work towards getting real data into it from your lib.

Obsolete Broker Access
Its marked as obsolete because its going to change in v2. You will still be able to do what you need to do, but the way of accessing the broker has changed. For what you currently need to do this is ok.
Sometimes null
As you have found this is really dependent on where in the page lifecycle you are currently at. To get around this, I would probably change my original recommendation a little.
In the code where you are currently creating messages and pushing them to the message bus, try putting them into HttpContext.Current.Items. If you haven't used it before, this is a store which asp.net provides out of the box which lasts the lifetime of a given request. You could have a list that you put in there, still create the message objects that you are doing, but put them into that list instead of pushing them through the broker.
Then, create a HttpModule (its really simple to do) which taps into the PostLogRequest event. Within this handler, you would pull the list out of the context, iterate through it and push the message into the message broker (accessing the same way you have been).

Visual basic.net Send strings between computers on LAN

I'm attempting to make a program to control the basic functions of a computer through a server/client method. I just need to send a string from the server to the client and vice versa. Every example I've found is really old and no longer works, or is poorly explained, or is in C#.
I almost have a working example as is, but I'm running into a threading issue where it won't let me modify elements in the UI after I've opened my thread for the connection from server to client or client to server. No idea how to fix this and I'm out of options.
Essentially I need a method of sending text from one IP/port to another in a server/client architecture.

You cannot access controls (UI elements) created on one thread directly from another thread. So if you have another thread and you want to update an element in the UI, you need to use the Control.BeginInvoke Method.
You didn't post any code, so I won't try and give you an example that may be utterly useless in your case, but there's a good article on MSDN here - How to: Make Thread-Safe Calls to Windows Forms Controls. This is for Windows Forms, nut the principals are the same for any application.

Cannot share shared preferences between remote service and activity in an application?

I tried using MULTI_MODE_PROCESS above API Level 11. But still I am not getting updating values in activity and values were updated in remote service. I am not able to share preferences in remote service and activity even in froyo,ginger bread versions.Is this a bug in Android ? Any solution we have for this ?
Without code, it's not clear exactly what you're doing, but my guess is that you did the same thing I did at first: simply change your existing call to getSharedPreferences() to use MULTI_MODE_PROCESS and expect synchronization. That's not enough; you also must call getSharedPreferences() again (with the multi-process flag) before accessing the SharedPreferences that may have been changed by another process.

VB.net NUnit (2.5) Windows forms Testing - Is this possible

I am retrofitting unit testing into a fairly complex system designed and written by other developers in VB.net. I am trying to develop unit tests for the GUI forms using NUnit and the NUnit Forms extension. (I've been looking at c# examples that are fairly easy to port over if you have a solution but don't know VB syntax as long as it uses NUnit classes)
I will try and explain what I am doing but first a brief description of the program. It basically monitors server activity. You need to connect to a server via a modal form with IP and Port fields(amongst others). Once you have connected to a server other parts of the program unlock and become usable (such as configuration of the server).
Desired process: Load program > click connect button > modal connect form loads > enter details > click OK to connect > main form updates to logged-in state > other functionality
The problem is that I cannot test the functionality of the connect form and then the logged-in functionality of the program. I can test that it loads the modal connect form correctly; enters the details and clicks OK (all fine so-far) but it does not appear to logically progress the program. The modal form just closes again seemingly without running the connect code from the program back-end and I’m back at the main menu not logged in to anything.
I have a feeling that I’ve either missed something really obvious or that it’s simply not doable in NUnit. I have trawled the internet in search of anything similar but the closest was another SO thread that was really generic. Without being able to actually test the logged-in version of the program, I'm at a major hurdle.
Another issue is handling message boxes that don’t have unique identifiers (e.g. “are you sure you want to exit?”); these also seem to be a major pain in the arse with NUnit
(If it makes any difference, I’m running the tests as a stand-alone project using a reference to the executable file of the built project, not the actual source)

IMHO the best approach to make GUI classes feasible for unit tests is to apply the Model-View-Presenter pattern and factor almost every program logic out of the form (=View) class to a separate Presenter class. Then you can unit test the Presenter class without the need for tools like "NUnit Forms".
Read Michael Feathers' article "The Humble Dialog Box" for an example in C++, you can easily apply that to Winforms, I guess.
I'm not sure about NUnit forms, but using the White library (which also works with NUnit), you're able to test the application by running the exe and mimicking user actions. The application runs normally so all application logic is performed.
Here's some example code for launching an app with White:

I'm not sure if NUnit Forms has similar capabilities, but if not, maybe you should look into White. I ran into some issues setting it up so make sure to read the documentation carefully (not very exhaustive unfortunately) before setting it up.

Notifications in wxWidgets?

I'm working on a small application using C++/wxWidgets, where several parts of the GUI need to be updated based on e.g. received UDP datagrams. More specifically, a secondary thread tries to keep a list of available "clients" in the network (which may come and go away) and e.g. corresponding comboboxes in the UI need to be updated to reflect the changes.
The documentation mentions that for this kind of thing EVT_UPDATE_UI would be a good choice. As far as I can understand from the sparse documentation, this event is sent automatically by the system and provides some support for assisted UI change.
However, I'd feel more comfortable using a more direct approach, i.e. where e.g. a window object could register/subscribe to receive notifications (either events or callbacks) upon particular events and another part of the code is sending out these notifications when required. I could do this in C++ using my own code, however I guess if wxWidgets already supports something like that, I should make use of it. However I haven't found anything in that regards.
So, the question is: does wxWidgets support this kind of notification system (or similar alternatives) or would I be best served coding my own?
AFAIK there is nothing directly usable in wxWidgets, but doing it on your own seems easy.
What I would do:
Create a wxEvtHandler-descendent class to hold the list of available "clients" in the network. Let this class have a wxCriticalSection, and use a wxCriticalSectionLocker for that in all methods that add or delete "clients".
Create a worker thread class by inheriting wxThread to handle your UDP datagrams, using blocking calls. The thread should directly call methods of the client list object whenever a client has to be added or removed. In these methods update the list of clients, and ::wxPostEvent() an event to itself (this will execute the whole notification calls in the main GUI thread).
Handle the event in the client list class, and notify all listeners that the list of clients has changed. The observer pattern seems to me a good fit. You could either call a method of all registered listeners directly, or send a wxCommandEvent to them.
Have you tried calling Update() on the widget(s) that change? Once you update the contents of the combo box, call Update(), and the contents should update.
