I need to move some changes from database a to database b, and some from b to a. Every comparison tool I've used requires you to pick a direction first and if you want to go the other direction, well then you get to wait for it to completely re-compare all over again.
Also the tools I've used don't allow you to make changes on the fly. If I see something I need to update, I've got to go update it using SSMS and then come back to the tool and re-compare all over again.
What I really want is a tool that works just like a text diffing application (BeyondCompare, WinMerge, etc.).
I've thought about trying to write my own app to do this so many times but it's a big undertaking so I always say "nah, it's not worth it". Well I've finally decided to give it a shot but I just want a final word on 2 issues:
1) Have I overlooked some amazing product that already does this? I've searched but haven't found anything. Would hate to waste a lot of time if someone has already done it though.
2) What Diffing api would be best suited for this type of application?
The best tool for doing this action is from redgate called sql compare.

I'm currently using a software with its own command-line interface, accepting its own commands with parameters, but these commands are documented in several places and files, so I can't simply run doxygen on it, and its not possible to add documentation to these files now.
Dumping everything in one text document seems a bit annoying to use, so my first idea is to generate a table, SQL for example, and add the documentation there, with several columns, such as command and its description, arguments and description of them, example command, execution time, etc., and add some kind of GUI to easily display the commands.
Are there already solutions for this, especially easy to maintenance ones?
Or is it better to have a different approach for this, such as html based Helpfiles?
you could build one yourself or use some third party tools like REDGATE SQLdoc..

I've already tried EazFuscator and Dotfuscator but are bad! I was able to easily read the source and pay it, and frankly I'm tired of the people that I copy the software.
I ask you which obfuscator use, at least to protect all the software by beginners.

One thing to keep in mind is that you want to do this in a way that makes business sense. To do that, you need to define your goals. So, exactly what are your goals?
Preventing piracy? That goal is not achievable. Even native code can be decompiled or cracked; the multitude of warez available online (even products like Windows and Photoshop) is proof of that.
If you can't prevent piracy, then how about merely reducing it? This, too, is misguided. It only takes one person cracking your code for it to be available to everyone. You have to be lucky every time. The pirates only have to be lucky once.
On another note, I would recommend SmartAssembly by RedGate. Ive used this before and its great compared to others. Please note that like any obfuscator, you cannot stop someone cracking your software if they are determined to do so.

I'm trying to "open" (?) a 20gb database with a .sql extension and can't find any documentation for beginners that doesn't already assume database access. I think as a first step I need some database management system. It don't need to have any development type capabilities - just the ability to compile (right word?) SQL.
Any suggestions?

The best RDBMS system to use as a beginner is probably going to be either MySQL or SQLite.
MySQL is an excellent database system and is capable of holding an extremely large amount of data. The data however is not stored in a movable file as you have described here.
SQLite is also an excellent database system and is capable of creating database files that you can move from one machine to another quite easily. The downside is that for a data set that large, you will likely have performance issues.
Based on the size of the file you mentioned, it sounds like what you have is a file with a whole bunch of SQL statements in it. Without seeing the contents of the file, it is extremely difficult to say which RDBMS it came from, but at the very least you should install MySQL and learn how to use it.

Does anybody know if autotrader.com offers an API or something that would help with mass postings of vehicles?
Or does anybody have any idea of what to use to create something like this? I was thinking of maybe a mouse location and click over a browser window type of thing.
AutoTrader provides a bulk upload feature through a file feed process. The file runs through a set of processes to associate it with the proper listing tier (Premium, Feature or Standard) and in addition normalizes the information across vehicle make and models. This process runs several times daily and is being migrated to a near real-time solution for quicker add or updates.
I can find no documentation on it but I've come across this link which seems to provide a json response.

Been looking through a number of other related posts relating to flowchart software.
I have been asked to put together a document outlining some of the typical problems our users encounter with our software product.
What I would like to do, is create an interactive/online flowchart that lets users choose from 4-5 overall headings on whats wrong. Then for this to dynamically expand more choices on pinpointing the problem, and so on and so on, until they can get a resolution to their problem.
The key thing that I have not been able to find in some of the flowchart software out there, is having the click + expand element.
- I dont want all options to appear to the end-user in a huge flow chart as it will distract away from their specific issue.
- I want them to be able to click away and go down a specific avenue that will end up giving them some good things to try, based on their decisions/clicks.
I was originally thinking of perhaps putting something in Flex or Silverlight (ideally someone would have a template out there) but am now thinking of taking advantage of 3rd party (ideally free) software.
This will need to be hosted in a browser.
Any ideas?
Check out FreeMind. It's mind mapping software, so not necessarily a flowcharting tool, but you can use it for what you describe.
