I've been wondering if there is a simpler way to change just one attribute then restyling the whole ControlTemplate in Windows Phone 8.
I recently found myself in need to change PasswordBox's background (the background shown when selected/typing into it) without changing anything else. I know there is the way of recreating the whole ControlTemplate (since it's HUGE for my taste and I'm getting a bit lost in it - I'm a rookie).
Are the other (preferably easier) options how to do it? If so, which?
The reason I'm asking is because I'm creating App that needs to look pretty much the same on Android, iOS and Windows Phone (android & iOS apps are done by someone else, I'm working on WP App and the design is given).
The App needs to look the same regardles of theme chosen by user on his phone.
And since the text is white and in dark theme when writing into TextBox/PasswordBox, the background is also changed to white - the result being you can't see what you're typing.
Is it easier to change "Foreground-when-typing" or "background-when-typing"? How to do it without recreating the whole ControlTemplate?

Now, whenever using a TextBox on that page it will always be white text on a black background. (Or reversed when selected.)

Unfortunately you can't do anything about the handles on the selection using the accent color though.
I haven't handed disabled or read-only states but they should be simple to change.

So all I am trying to do is change the color of a button when clicked but I've spent a good amount with errors and couldn't find anything helpful. Understand I am brand new to Visual Studio 2015 community.
There seems to be a lot of ways to do this either using brushes or solidcolorbrushes or a conversion.

If you want to change the foreground color when the button is pressed, you will have to modify the Style of your control. Right click on your button in designer window, then Edit Template->Edit a Copy - this should create a copy of default template in resources, it should look like this:

You will find out that button's colors are changed by visual state manager, depending on current state. In Pressed state you will find this:

This means, that no matter you set to the Foreground, when pressed, visual state manager will always change button's color to SystemControlHighlightBaseHighBrush. Of course you are free to change this value in the style. Then only apply it to your button:

I am not able to redefine the Template of an AppBarButton inside BottomAppBar in a Windows Phone 8.1 project.
In Visual Studio XAML designer it changes (it shows "button 2" text), but when I deploy it to the phone or to the emulator, the default template is applied.
I tried to right click the control, "Edit template", "Edit a copy...", but it's not available. Is it possible, to redefine this template?

I have Windows 8.1 Pro with Visual Studio Community 2013 Update 4 installed.
No, it is not possible to customize the app bar on Windows Phone 8.1 beyond the foreground and background colors. On Windows Phone the app bar is system UI rather than app as UI.
If you want to customize your app bar buttons you can put them in a custom panel docked at the bottom of the page instead of in a Page.BottomAppBar
You can definitely right click and edit a copy. I just did this recently. Try putting a temporary AppBarButton at the top of your page and right click that one. Here is the default style in case you need it:

I'm designing a corporate Windows Phone that will be used outdoors in bright sunlight. Certain fields in the app will be used purely for displaying data, but will be disabled for editing. Unfortunately disabled textboxes show up in a pale grey, which doesn't have enough contrast for outdoor viewing.
Is there a simple way to alter the PhoneTextDisabledBrush or PhoneDisabledBrush at the resource level to make the controls appear white? Are these the correct brushes?
I've tried add the following to the grid which contains the controls, but it makes no difference:

You can for example modify VisualState x:Name="Disabled" - this is the one that causes the problem. When you set the Control as disabled, the Storyboard changes colors of your TextBox. Depending on your needs you can comment it out or adjust colors for your purposes.

I have created a style which works to some extent to what I am looking for, in fact it does actually work. However I need to update the style so that I may use it on several buttons and not just one. Currently I place the button source within the style itself, and I'd like to just be able to apply the style where the button actually exists on the page. This is what I am currently doing, but only works for a single button. Also, this style does not exactly match the default application bar style, which from what I can tell regardless of light or dark theme fills the circle with the device accent color and the icon inside of the button remains white, How might I update my solution for this as well?

Setting IsReadOnly on a TextBox applies certain styles to the TextBox including its Background. You can change these styles by doing the following:
Open your xaml file in Blend from within Visual Studio
In Blend, right click on your TextBox and click on Edit Template-->Edit Copy
In the next dialog, tick Application to define the new style in App.xaml and give your style a name.
Click save and close Blend.
You will see the new style that you just created is in App.xaml. You would want to change the value of Background story board target property under the ReadOnly visual state to whichever color you want.
To apply this new style to any TextBox just add Style="{StaticResource TextBoxStyle1}" to your TextBox where TextBoxStyle1 is the name you assigned to your style.

Then in your text box you simply point to this style:

Another approach is to set the TextBox IsHitTestVisible=false. The field is then also not editable by the user and you can set the background as usual.
By the way, setting a different border color of a disabled textbox can be done application wide programmatically:
(App.Current.Resources["PhoneDisabledBrush"] as SolidColorBrush).Color = Colors.Magenta;
RichTextBox allows a lot of customization and works well for when you want to register events. Note that IsReadOnly is set to true by default for RichTextBox so you do not need to set this property.
