Require a textbox to have value in FIllable PDF - pdf

I have a fillable PDF file. I would like to require that a TextBox has a value when the user saves the PDF document i.e. the value is not blank.
Here is what I tried:
(1) Setting the "Required" field on the "TextBox".
PROBLEM: That didn't do much except color the textbox red.
(2) I tried to use the following code in the "onBlur" event:
f = getField(event.target.name)
if (f.value.length == 0)
{
f.setFocus()
//Optional Message - Comment out the next line to remove
app.alert("This field is required. Please enter a value.")
}
PROBLEM: If the user never clicks this box there is no problem
(3) I tried to use the "Validation" tab and run a custom JavaScript.
PROBLEM: If you don't click on the box there is no validation so it is perfectly happy to leave the textbox blank if the user forgets to fill it in
OK, I am out of ideas... Anyone?

Since you are using Acrobat JavaScript I assume you use a viewer that supports and executes Acrobat JavaScript. In this situation you can set the document's WillSave action to a custom JavaScript action and perform validation here. I'm not sure if you can cancel the save operation but at least you can display an alert if the validation fails.
UPDATE: This script will loop through all the fields and display and alert if the field value is empty.
for ( var i = 0; i < this.numFields; i++) {
var fieldName = this.getNthFieldName(i);
var field = this.getField(fieldName);
if (field.value.length == 0)
{
field.setFocus()
app.alert("Field " + fieldName + " is required. Please enter a value.")
}
}
Put the script in document's Will Save action and it will run every time the user saves the form. In Acrobat you set this in Tools > JavaScript > Set Document Actions and select Document Will Save.

How to check multiple PDF files for annotations/comments?

Problem: I routinely receive PDF reports and annotate (highlight etc.) some of them. I had the bad habit of saving the annotated PDFs together with the non-annotated PDFs. I now have hundreds of PDF files in the same folder, some annotated and some not. Is there a way to check every PDF file for annotations and copy only the annotated ones to a new folder?
Thanks a lot!
I'm on Win 7 64bit, I have Adobe Acrobat XI installed and I'm able to do some beginner coding in Python and Javascript
Please ignore the following suggestion, since the answers already solved the problem.
EDIT: Following Mr. Wyss' suggestion, I created the following code for Acrobat's Javascript console to be run only once at the beginning:
counter = 1;
// Open a new report
var rep = new Report();
rep.size = 1.2;
rep.color = color.blue;
rep.writeText("Files WITH Annotations");
Then this code should be applied to all PDFs:
this.syncAnnotScan();
annots = this.getAnnots();
path = this.path;
if (annots) {
rep.color = color.black;
rep.writeText(" ");
rep.writeText(counter.toString()+"- "+path);
rep.writeText(" ");
if (counter% 20 == 0) {
rep.breakPage();
}
counter++;
}
And, at last, one code to be run only once at the end:
//Now open the report
var docRep = rep.open("files_with_annots.pdf");
There are two problems with this solution:
1. The "Action Wizard" seems to always apply the same code afresh to each PDF (that means that the "counter" variable, for instance, is meaningless; it will always be = 1. But more importantly, var "rep" will be unassigned when the middle code is run on different PDFs).
2. How can I make the codes that should be run only once run only at the beginning or at the end, instead of running everytime for every single PDF (like it does by default)?
Thank you very much again for your help!
This would be possible using the Action Wizard to put together an action.
The function to determine whether there are annotations in the document would be done in Acrobat JavaScript. Roughly, the core function would look like this:
this.syncAnnotScan() ; // updates all annots
var myAnnots = this.getAnnots() ;
if (myAnnots != null) {
// do something if there are annots
} else {
// do something if there are no annots
}
And that should get you there.
I am not completely positive, but I think there is also a Preflight check which tells you whether there are annotations in the document. If so, you would create a Preflight droplet, which would sort out the annotated and not annotated documents.
Mr. Wyss is right, here's a step-by-step guide:
In Acrobat XI Pro, go to the 'Tools' panel on the right side
Click on the 'Action Wizard' tab (you must first make it visible, though)
Click on 'Create New Action...', choose 'More tools' > 'Execute Javascript' and add it to right-hand pane > click on 'Execute Javascript' > 'Specify Settings' (uncheck 'prompt user' if you want) > paste this code:
.
this.syncAnnotScan();
var annots = this.getAnnots();
var fname = this.documentFileName;
fname = fname.replace(",", ";");
var errormsg = "";
if (annots) {
try {
this.saveAs({
cPath: "/c/folder/"+fname,
bPromptToOverwrite: false //make this 'true' if you want to be prompted on overwrites
});
} catch(e) {
for (var i in e)
{errormsg+= (i + ": " + e[i]+ " / ");}
app.alert({
cMsg: "Error! Unable to save the file under this name ('"+fname+"'- possibly an unicode string?) See this: "+errormsg,
cTitle: "Damn you Acrobat"
});
}
;}
annots = 0;
Save and run it! All your annotated PDFs will be saved to 'c:\folder' (but only if this folder already exists!)
Be sure to enable first Javascript in 'Edit' > 'Preferences...' > 'Javascript' > 'Enable Acrobat Javascript'.
VERY IMPORTANT: Acrobat's JS has a bug that doesn't allow Docs to be saved with commas (",") in their names (e.g., "Meeting with suppliers, May 11th.pdf" - this will get an error). Therefore, I substitute in the code above all "," for ";".

I would like to grey out the submit button until required fields in a pdf form have been filled out

I am recently task with collecting data using a pdf form, some fields in the form are required but not all fields, I have created a submit button and the department will received the form fill out, now the form needs to be reset when submitted. so i add a button to submit the form and then reset it. the problem is that if someone fills the form and hits submit missing a required field then when they hit ok all the fields are being reset and the person needs to start over. Please Advice.
My idea is to gray out the submit button until all the required fields are fill out, no idea how to do this on adobe pro.
Thanks
As you immediately reset the form after submitting (what happens when the submit fails?), greying out or making read-only is a way to go.
Assuming that you did set the required property for the required fields, you could add the following snipped to your Calculation script:
var cnt = 0 ;
for (var i = 0 ; i < this.numFields ; i++) {
var mf = this.getNthFieldName(i) ;
if (mf.type != "button" && mf.type != "signature") {
if (mf.required == true && mf.value == mf.defaultValue) {
cnt++ ;
}
}
}
if (cnt > 0) {
this.getField("mySubmitButton").readonly = true ;
} else {
this.getField("mySubmitButton").readonly = false ;
}
And that should do it.
However, this approach is not very efficient, and for bigger number of fields and just a few required ones, it might be better to create an array of the required field names, and loop through this array instead of all fields.

Check Word Doc for Field Code before applying

So I've coded a VSTO addin using vb.net to add a header to a document in Word however from historical methods we have lots of templates with field codes. My addin does not account for these and simply strips the header to add xxxxx value you choose from the pop up.
I need my code to be smart enough to 'spot' the field code and append or if it does not exist e.g. a blank document then continue running as expected. I can append this field code using the below code:
wordDocument.Variables("fieldname").Value = "xxxx"
wordDocument.Fields.Update
However my tool then adds the header as normal and strips most the content from the template. So effectively my question is how would I code a check for this before proceeding. So in plain English I would need my addin to go from this:
Load pop up
Set xxxx value in header
Close
To this:
Load pop up
Check Document for existing "fieldname"
If "fieldname" exists then
wordDocument.Variables("fieldname").Value = "xxxx" (from pop up selection)
wordDocument.Fields.Update
However if "fieldname" doesn't exist then continue as normal....
Sorry if this is a little complex and/or long winded.
Thanks in advance.
Here is my code in C#, hope this might help you to code in VB.Net
foreach (Section sec in doc.Sections)
{
doc.ActiveWindow.View.set_SeekView(WdSeekView.wdSeekCurrentPageHeader);
foreach (HeaderFooter headerFooter in sec.GetHeadersFooters())
{
doc.ActiveWindow.View.set_SeekView(headerFooter.IsHeader ? WdSeekView.wdSeekCurrentPageHeader : WdSeekView.wdSeekCurrentPageFooter);
if (headerFooter.Range.Fields.Count > 0)
{
//Append to existing fields
UpdateFields(headerFooter.Range.Fields);
}
else
{
//Add field code
AddFieldCode(headerFooter.Range);
}
}
doc.ActiveWindow.View.set_SeekView(WdSeekView.wdSeekMainDocument);
}
Extension method to iterate through the header types
public static IEnumerable<HeaderFooter> GetHeadersFooters(this Section section)
{
List<HeaderFooter> headerFooterlist = new List<HeaderFooter>
{
section.Headers[WdHeaderFooterIndex.wdHeaderFooterPrimary],
section.Headers[WdHeaderFooterIndex.wdHeaderFooterFirstPage],
section.Headers[WdHeaderFooterIndex.wdHeaderFooterEvenPages],
section.Footers[WdHeaderFooterIndex.wdHeaderFooterPrimary],
section.Footers[WdHeaderFooterIndex.wdHeaderFooterFirstPage],
section.Footers[WdHeaderFooterIndex.wdHeaderFooterEvenPages]
};
return headerFooterlist;
}

Phpbb new successful member registration pop up window

I would like to create a pop up welcome message for the new member that's successfully registered.
But I m having problem of finding where should I put the code, I have check the ucp_register.html ,, but I don't think that is the display content after the member successfully registered, can anyone help me please? Thanks
It would likely to be a more robust solution to display the popup on the first time the user is logged in as an activated user -- after registration they may not be activated, or they may close the browser window immediately after registration.
The way to do this would be to add a column (say, user_JBL_seen_message INT to the phpbb_users table in the database, then modify functions.php to check that column:
In functions.php, find:
// The following assigns all _common_ variables that may be used at any point in a template.
Before, add:
if($user->data['is_registered'] && $user->data['is_active'] && !$user->data['is_bot'])
{
if(isset($user->data['user_JBL_seen_message']) && !$user->data['user_JBL_seen_message']))
{
$showPopup = true;
$sql = 'UPDATE ' . USERS_TABLE . ' SET user_JBL_seen_message = 1
WHERE user_id = ' . (int)$user->data['user_id'];
if (!$result = $db->sql_query($sql))
{
return false;
}
}
}
Then, find:
$template->assign_vars(array(
After, add:
'JBL_POPUP' => $showPopup,
Then, you can add the popup HTML code to your overall_header.html template file, where appropriate...
<!-- IF JBL_POPUP -->
.... your HTML popup code here.....
<!-- END IF -->
If you don't want existing users to see the popup, then fill the new column with 1s.
I also agree with Damien's suggestion to use a jQuery UI dialog rather than a popup -- most users' browsers will block popups. However, use jQuery in noconflict mode to avoid conflicts with other mods.

Dojo OnKeyPress Handler: TextBox value is blank

I have a Dojo form that does not contain a submit button. Instead, I added an onkeypress handler to calls a method when Enter is pressed. The problem I am having is that when I hit enter before blurring off the current field, the _process method thinks that field is empty.
Or in other words: type in field1. hit tab. type in field2. hit enter. field2 is blank unless i click off the field or shift-tab back.
Any ideas?
dojo.connect(dijit.byId("fkrform"),"onKeyPress",function(e) {
if (e.keyCode == dojo.keys.ENTER) {
_process();
}
and the method it calls:
function _process()
{
var field1 = dijit.byId("field1").value;
var field2 = dijit.byId("field2").value;
alert(username);
alert(password);
...do stuff...
}
The fields are of dojoType: dijit.form.TextBox, and the form is: dijit.form.Form
Use dijit.byId('field1').get('value') instead of directly try to access the property "value". In your example you saved the value in the variable field1 and field2 and in the alert you use the variable username and password could be the answer why you don't get anything. But you still should use the get method to get a property instead of directly access the property.
When you press "Enter" your form will submit. So you need to connect to the "onSubmit" event on the form, instead of onkeyPress or onKeyUp.
The first example i created prints the value of the input box on every key someone pressed in the console.
http://jsfiddle.net/a8FHg/
But what you really wanted was hooking into the submit. I modified the example. The new example connects to "onSubmit" and creates an alert box with the text of the user input.
http://jsfiddle.net/a8FHg/1/
For completness if jsfiddle doesn't work some day. You JavaScript should looks like this.
dojo.ready(function(){
var form = dijit.byId('form');
var box = dijit.byId('box');
var submit = function(event) {
dojo.stopEvent(event);
alert("User input was " + box.get('value'));
};
dojo.connect(form, 'onSubmit', submit);
});
Assuming your form in your HTML has the id form and your box have the id box.
