check if date time is of today after 8 am server - sql

I have the following table
ID UpdatedDate
--- ------------
1 2013-03-04 08:05:07.203
2 2013-03-04 07:05:07.203
3 2013-03-05 10:05:07.203
Now I want to show records only which occur after 8.oo AM today only.
for that I am doing as following
select * from tab
where
LastUpdatedDate > GETDATE()
and datepart(hh, LastUpdatedDate) >= 8
the issue occurs if I run this query after the time mentioned in the updatedDate.
in that case LastUpdatedDate > GETDATE() fails and returns nothing.
Any idea on how to go about this issue?

101 - extract date part
108 - extract time part ( 24 hour clock format)

I know you've already accepted an answer, but doing this using string comparisons is a really bad idea - it precludes any possibility of using an index.
Instead, why not round the return value from GETDATE() to 08:00 today, and directly compare the LastUpdatedDate column to that:
select * from tab
where
LastUpdatedDate >=
DATEADD(day,DATEDIFF(day,'20010101',GETDATE()),'2001-01-01T08:00:00')
The DATEADD/DATEDIFF pair are used to do the rounding I've described. They work because of the fixed relationship between the two dates I'm using.

dateadd(day, datediff(day, 0, getdate()), 0) will give you the date of today with time part 00:00:00. Useut that the third parameter in dateadd(hour, 8, ... and you have a datetime value where the time is 08:00:00 that you can use to compare against your column.
Applying functions to columns should if possible always be avoided because that will make your query Non-Sargable.
select *
from tab
where UpdatedDate >= dateadd(hour, 8, dateadd(day, datediff(day, 0, getdate()), 0))

SQL: Trying to select records 7 days before date

I have a table with a date field called oppo_installdate. This is a date in the future, and I basically want to select records where this date is 7 or fewer days from the current date. I have tried to do this with the query below but it is older returning dates from 2019 as well, and I'm not sure why that's happening.
select * from [CRM_Test].[dbo].[Opportunity]
where (GETDATE() >= DATEADD(day,-7, oppo_installdate))
Could anyone suggest a better way of doing this?
Whenever you're using a WHERE always try to apply any functions to constants, or other functions, never your columns. DATEADD(day,-7, oppo_installdate) will make the query non-SARGable, and could slow it down as any indexes won't be able to be used.
It seems like what you simply want is:
SELECT *
FROM [dbo].[Opportunity]
WHERE oppo_installdate >= DATEADD(DAY, 7, GETDATE());
Note that GETDATE returns a datetime, so if you want from midnight 7 days ago, you would use CONVERT(date,GETDATE()) (or CAST(GETDATE() AS date)).
Use below condition-
select * from [CRM_Test].[dbo].[Opportunity]
where oppo_installdate>= DATEADD(day,-7, GETDATE()) and oppo_installdate<=getdate()
This should give you the records where oppo_installdate is 7 or fewer days away from now:

SQL WHERE clause to pick data for last 7 days

I want to build a view on the server with a SELECT statement and pick all records that are created at the last 7 days?
Original creation_date field is in varchar like '18/11/08' and I use the CONVERT(datetime, creation_date,11) to convert it into 2018-11-08 00:00:00.000, but I don't know how to do in the WHERE clause, so it only selects all records created for last 7 days.
use where clause like below
select t.* from your_table t

In order to get the best performance, you should keep the calculation away from the column:
SELECT *
FROM <YourTable>
WHERE creation_date >= CONVERT(char(8), DATEADD(day,-7, GETDATE()), 11)
This will handle it well because of the format of the varchar - yy/mm/dd. Would not have worked with all formats
The best thing to do is store dates properly to begin with - in a column with a Date data type.
Assuming you can't change the database structure, you can use DateDiff with GetDate():
SELECT <ColumnsList>
FROM <TableName>
WHERE DATEDIFF(DAY, CONVERT(datetime, creation_date,11), GETDATE()) <= 7
Of course, you need to replace the <ColumnsList> with the list of columns and <TableName> with the actual table name.

Recover data only from the previous day in a table in SQL Server

I need to retrieve data from a table that has date referenced only the previous day, I am trying to do with the query below but I am not getting:
SELECT
Log.ValorEntrada, Log.DataHoraEvento, Log.NumeroEntrada
FROM
Log
WHERE
Log.DataHoraEvento = (GETDATE()-1)
How can I get this result?
In SQL Server, GETDATE() has a time component. I would recommend:
WHERE Log.DataHoraEvento >= CAST(GETDATE()-1 as DATE) AND
Log.DataHoraEvento < CAST(GETDATE() as DATE)
This condition is "sargable", meaning that an index can be used. The following also is:
WHERE CONVERT(DATE, Log.DataHoraEvento) >= CONVERT(DATE, GETDATE())
Almost all functions prevent the use of indexes, but conversion/casting to a date is an exception.
Finally, if you don't care about indexes, you can also write this as:
WHERE DATEDIFF(day, Log.DataHoraEvento, GETDATE()) = 1
DATEDIFF() with day as the first argument counts the number of "day" boundaries between the two date/times. Everything that happened yesterday has exactly one date boundary.
If DataHoraEvento is a DATETIME, its likely that it has the full time, hence GETDATE()-1 isn't getting any matches. You should search for a range like this:

You should also use SYSDATETIME() (if you on SQL Server 2008+) instead of GETDATE() as this gives you datetime2(7) precision.
You can try this :
MEMBER BETWEEN DATEADD(day, -2, GETDATE()) AND DATEADD(day, -1, GETDATE())

How to only check the time on datetime fields but ignore the date?

I have a column that stores data in datetime format. I want to check for all instances where the time part of this column is not equal to 00:00:00:000 - the date does not matter.
Basically, if time() was a function, something like this:

FROM progen.DY
WHERE TIME(DY_DATE) <> '00:00:00:000'
How do I go about doing this?
You only need a minor tweak on what you already have.
SELECT *
FROM progen.DY
WHERE TIME(DY_DATE) <> '00:00:00:000'
Use CONVERT to change your DATETIME to a TIME.
SELECT *
FROM progen.DY
WHERE CONVERT(TIME, DY_DATE) <> '00:00:00:000'
Another way is to convert it to different datatype, eg

FROM progen.DY
WHERE CAST(DY_DATE as float) - CAST(DY_DATE as int) > 0

I do this all the time when trying to see if a table's column should be turned into a date instead of a datetime, which is really the answer.
select *
from progen.dy
where cast(dy_date as Date) <> dy_date
the cast removes the time and datetime has higher precedence, so when compared, if the are unequal then it has a time value. Same thing could be done with a cast to time, with a bit of different syntax.
Use DATEDIFF and DATEADD to instead get the date part of the datetime. Compare the column against the date only, and it will return those rows that have a non-zero time.
The way this works is that we first calculate the difference (in days) between the epoch and the value. We add that number to the epoch to create a new datetime. Since the result of DATEDIFF is an integer, any time component gets rounded off.
SELECT *
FROM Table
WHERE DateColumn <> DATEADD(d, DATEDIFF(d, 0, DateColumn), 0)
The time function could then be implemented by the following, not that I recommend it for this specific scenario:
SELECT DATEDIFF(minute, DATEADD(d, DATEDIFF(d, 0, DateColumn), 0), DateColumn) as MinutesIntoDay,
-- or, if you require higher precision
DATEDIFF(second, DATEADD(d, DATEDIFF(d, 0, DateColumn), 0), DateColumn) as MinutesIntoDay

Edit: As mentioned in other answers, you can cast to DATE to achieve the same effect as DATEADD(d, DATEDIFF(d, 0, DateColumn), 0), which cleans up nicely. However, DATE was only added in SQL Server 2008, whereas the formula has compatibility back to at least SQL 2000. So if you need the backwards compatibility or are dealing with SQL CE, casting to DATE is unavailable.

SQL Server: Get data for only the past year

I am writing a query in which I have to get the data for only the last year. What is the best way to do this?
SELECT ... FROM ... WHERE date > '8/27/2007 12:00:00 AM'
The following adds -1 years to the current date:
SELECT ... From ... WHERE date > DATEADD(year,-1,GETDATE())
I found this page while looking for a solution that would help me select results from a prior calendar year. Most of the results shown above seems return items from the past 365 days, which didn't work for me.
At the same time, it did give me enough direction to solve my needs in the following code - which I'm posting here for any others who have the same need as mine and who may come across this page in searching for a solution.
SELECT .... FROM .... WHERE year(*your date column*) = year(DATEADD(year,-1,getdate()))
Thanks to those above whose solutions helped me arrive at what I needed.
Well, I think something is missing here. User wants to get data from the last year and not from the last 365 days. There is a huge diference. In my opinion, data from the last year is every data from 2007 (if I am in 2008 now). So the right answer would be:
SELECT ... FROM ... WHERE YEAR(DATE) = YEAR(GETDATE()) - 1
Then if you want to restrict this query, you can add some other filter, but always searching in the last year.
SELECT ... FROM ... WHERE YEAR(DATE) = YEAR(GETDATE()) - 1 AND DATE > '05/05/2007'
The most readable, IMO:
SELECT * FROM TABLE WHERE Date >
DATEADD(yy, -1, CONVERT(datetime, CONVERT(varchar, GETDATE(), 101)))
Which:
Gets now's datetime GETDATE() = #8/27/2008 10:23am#
Converts to a string with format 101 CONVERT(varchar, #8/27/2008 10:23am#, 101) = '8/27/2007'
Converts to a datetime CONVERT(datetime, '8/27/2007') = #8/27/2008 12:00AM#
Subtracts 1 year DATEADD(yy, -1, #8/27/2008 12:00AM#) = #8/27/2007 12:00AM#
There's variants with DATEDIFF and DATEADD to get you midnight of today, but they tend to be rather obtuse (though slightly better on performance - not that you'd notice compared to the reads required to fetch the data).

GETDATE() returns current date and time.
If last year starts in midnight of current day last year (like in original example) you should use something like:

I, like #D.E. White, came here for similar but different reasons than the original question. The original question asks for the last 365 days. #samjudson's answer provides that. #D.E. White's answer returns results for the prior calendar year.
My query is a bit different in that it works for the prior year up to and including the current date:
SELECT .... FROM .... WHERE year(date) > year(DATEADD(year, -2, GETDATE()))
For example, on Feb 17, 2017 this query returns results from 1/1/2016 to 2/17/2017
For some reason none of the results above worked for me.
This selects the last 365 days.
SELECT ... From ... WHERE date BETWEEN CURDATE() - INTERVAL 1 YEAR AND CURDATE()
The other suggestions are good if you have "SQL only".
However I suggest, that - if possible - you calculate the date in your program and insert it as string in the SQL query.
At least for for big tables (i.e. several million rows, maybe combined with joins) that will give you a considerable speed improvement as the optimizer can work with that much better.
argument for DATEADD function :
DATEADD (*datepart* , *number* , *date* )
datepart can be: yy, qq, mm, dy, dd, wk, dw, hh, mi, ss, ms
number is an expression that can be resolved to an int that is added to a datepart of date
date is an expression that can be resolved to a time, date, smalldatetime, datetime, datetime2, or datetimeoffset value.

I had a similar problem but the previous coder only provided the date in mm-yyyy format. My solution is simple but might prove helpful to some (I also wanted to be sure beginning and ending spaces were eliminated):

CONVERT(datetime,REPLACE(LEFT(LTRIM([MoYr]),2),'-
','')+'/01/'+RIGHT(RTRIM([MoYr]),4)) >= DATEADD(year,-1,GETDATE())

For me this worked well

If you are trying to calculate "rolling" days, you can simplify it by using:
