Is there a way in Intellij 12 to open a file in the project tree with one click? I'm coming from text-mate to intellij and I'd like to only have to click on an item once for it to appear in the editing screen.
If there is a benefit to having to click it twice then please let me know, but to me it seems like a redundant double click.
I'm using Mac OS X.
Enable "Autoscroll to source" option . You can find it by clicking on the gear icon in the project explorer
Also, if you want more control, alt-F1-enter. Technically 3 clicks, but one motion.
Update: Requires have "Use all F1, F2, etc keys as standard function keys" to be selected under the Mac Keyboard Preferences.

So there is probably a keyboard shortcut which allows to navigate from one view to another by just entering the view number.
I tried the different digits with Ctrl, Ctrl+Shift, Ctrl+Alt etc but could not find the right shortcut.
How can I easily navigate between those views?

ps. There's a plugin force-shortcuts if you wanna replace your mouse click actions with shortcuts (https://github.com/treytrahin/force-shortcuts-intellij-plugin). It's super annoying but you learn really fast. And by the way here are such plugins to most editors and IDEs.
ALT+F1 opens a window where you can choose one of the views by pressing the corresponding number.
Info: It actually opens the selected file in the selected view - which is not that bad maybe - but not 100% what you want?
Also there are cool things like pressing C to open a file chosen in Project Explorer directly in Explorer for example.

Yep. They are listed in Keymap. MainMenu -> View -> ToolWindows.
P.S.: Idea has a nice Find by shortcut function in Keymap settings page, I used it, to answer your question.
In Android Studio, you can change the Keymap this way:
Preferences -> Keymap
Then open Tool Windows. You may need to scroll down to see all the options.
Right-click on the element you want to assign a new key-stroke. Select Add Keyboard Shortcut. Make sure that the rectangle with a plus in it is selected (use your mouse) and press the key-stroke that you want for this item.
Android Studio will warn you if that key-stroke is already assigned. Click OK to reassign that key-stroke to the item. It'll warn you one more time that you will need to remove the previous assignment for that key-stroke. Click Remove to proceed. You should see the updated keystroke in the right-most column.

Open Project View tool window, switch to the Packages view mode, click on the gear icon, enable Flattern Packages option, disable Show Modules option.
Start typing the package name to activate the speed search.
Another option is to use Navigate | Class, type your.package.*, select some class, press Alt+Home for the navigation bar popup, use arrows to select the package, press F4 (may not work if navigation bar is not floating, but enabled in the View menu instead).
There is one more easy way, though specifically, it wont only search packages.
What you can do is a global search:
Ctrl + Shift + F
Be sure of focusing on the Project tab and then knock the keyboard, just look what is happening, maybe help you:)
Another easier way is to use the "Search Everywhere" option
1. Double click Shift button.
2. Enter the package name.
Though the result will not be on the top of the list, its easy to locate.
I'm new to the XCode IDE, Mac and IOS programming. Means that I'll swap a lot between help and editor. However when using Cmd+Tab I'll not swap between help and IDE but between other open apps.
Does anyone know a short cut to switch between IDE and help?
OPT+Cmd+? will bring the help in XCode (the shortcut is mentioned if you go to the help section)

The default shortcut to open the Organizer is Cmd+Shift+2, which you can edit in the Preferences of Xcode if you want.
There is also a shortcut which will directly bring you to the Documentation tab: Cmd+Alt+?.
Additionally, you can set a shortcut to switch between the windows of the active app in System Preferences → Keyboard → Keyboard Shortcuts. The default is Cmd+< but I prefer Alt+Tab.
Command-Option-Shift-/ (a.k.a. Command-Option-?) will bring up the documentation window.
Also, you can cycle between windows within an application with Command-` (works in any application). You can use that to switch easily between a project window and other open windows, including the documentation window.

If you are on Mountain Lion (not sure if it works on earlier versions), you can also use the 4 finger scroll (Mission Control shortcut) if you prefer. With the Organizer (help) open, use 4 fingers and swipe upwards to reveal mission control. On top you'll see virtual desktops. Drag and drop your Organizer/help window onto the second desktop. Now you can flick right or left with 4 fingers on your trackpad to switch between code view and help. I know this sounds complicated but once you get used to it, it becomes second nature. But yeah Cmd + ~ is good too.
I am currently using xcode and I find it's lack of tabs quite disturbing.
I currently use command-shift-d to search through all the files, or ctrl-1 to open the history of files that were recently opened.
It works but I find it less effective than just tabbing through the few files i am currently working on.
Is there any way, third party or not, to enable some sort of tabbed organization?
If not, is there any other way to quickly navigate through a subset of files?
XCode 4 now supports tabs. You can enable by selecting "View / Show Tab Bar" menu.
Not really, but one alternative is View > Show Favorites Bar and drag five or six frequently-used source files into it. Not as flexible as tabs but satisfies your request for "quickly navigate through a subset of files".
The traditional way is to use the detail view. Get the files you want in the Detail view by one of these means:
Put them all in the same group, then select the group
Enter a filter expression in the Search Bubble that narrows the items shown
Define a Smartgroup that includes just the files you want
Get a list of the files as a Find in Project result, then select that item in Find Results
Then you can use the Detail View as your list of interesting files and navigate through it quickly with the up and down arrows.
First of all, you can use Textmate (which I believe has Xcode integration). Otherwise:
Window (Menu) -> Organizer (ctrl-command-o)
At the bottom of that window, if you don't have two panes, click the square to the right of the gear. Now drag code files of interest to the left, grey pane--a single click or arrow up/down will open the file in the editor pane.
If you do open a bunch of windows, as vog suggested, you'll need to command-~ through them--not alt-tab.

The Xcode source code editor allows you to choose the file from a list. It's two clicks instead of one (as it would be with tabbing), but it's better than nothing.
In addition, you can simply Alt-Tab through your open source code windows. This is not slower than tabbing, and has the same effect since the source code windows are usually placed exactly one in front of another.

You can navigate between files using "Recent Files"
Write simple applescript:
tell application "Xcode"
tell application "System Events"
keystroke "1" using {control down} -- open "Related Files"
key code 125 -- choose "Recent Files" ("keystroke down" doesn't work)
keystroke return -- enter to "Recent Files"
key code 125 -- choose previous file
end tell
end tell
And bind it to some shortcut using for example FastScripts(free up to 10 bindings)
