Design pattern for post-execution output? - oop

I'm writing a system that performs an execution job (running a bunch of scripts) and outputs a report at the end in a few different formats.
I'm looking for some sort of insight into how this reporting should work. Is there a design pattern or a best practice that applies here?
For example, my reporting code is in a Reporter class, with subclasses for the different formats and destinations.
Should this Reporter class be all-knowing, with access to everything else in the system (so it can extract what it needs)? Should the system "feed" information into the Reporter as it executes, so it doesn't have any special access?

Features and Use Case Diagrams Vs Requirements and Use Cases

According to "Head First Object-Oriented Analysis and Design", Complex projects involves first finding a feature list -> drawing use case diagrams -> breaking into smaller modules before implementing object oriented design (requirements gathering -> use cases -> OO -> design patterns etc.)
I want to understand, what is the criteria for the size of project when feature lists and use case diagrams should be implemented before finding requirements and writing use cases?
I am particularly interested in how can this knowledge be applied to my real wold problems
Example, I am working on a UI that send instrument commands to the server and displays the response back from the server. I know from customer feedback that the UI should have the following things:
It should be able to let the user select an instrument from available list and send any custom command and display the result
It should be able to let the user select an instrument and a command from available list and display the result (create commands using drag and drops from given lists)
It should be able to have capability of creating macros
Is this UI project small enough to not have steps for gathering features and drawing use case diagrams? Do we go straight to categorizing the asks as requirements and start gathering requirements and writing use cases?
How would one go about breaking down project of this nature to deduce it to its appropriate class diagrams?
I have tried considering the above mentioned asks as features and then tried creating requirements, mainly on the different states that one could have during the life cycle of the UI application but I am still not sure and unable to comprehend the teachings of the books on this project.
I haven't read the book, so I'm not sure what the author(s) of the book really wanted to emphasize here. But I assume that you misinterpreted it.
Without knowing the requirements there is no feature list. If you don't know what is needed then you can't say anything about the system's capabilities.
Gathering requirements is an iterative process. First you gather the high-level requirements in order to be able to start building a mental model about the system. This can help you to start think about the supported features. By sharing your mental model and the exposed feature set of the system with the stakeholder, it initiates the next iteration.
Here you can start talking about actors, user journeys, use cases, etc. These are mainly focusing on the happy paths. As you have more and more iterations you will reach a point where you can start talking about edge and corner cases: What suboptimal cases can we foreseen? What can we do (prevention, detection, mitigation)? How does it affect the system/actors/journeys?...
The better you understand the needs and circumstances, the better the design and implementation of the system could be.

Will we always have high-level and low-level (edge cases and detailed use cases) requirements i.e. we will first need to make use case diagrams and then write individual detailed use cases?
There are a lot of factors which can influence this. Just to name a few:
Is it a system, submodule, or component design?
Is it a green or a brownfield project?
Is the stakeholder experienced enough to know which information matters and which doesn't from the IT project perspecitive?
Does the architect / system designer have previous experience with the same domain?
Does wireframe or mockup exist at project kick-off?
Should the project satisfy special security, legal or governmental regulations?
etc...
In short, yes there can be circumstances where you don't need several iterations, but based on my experiences that's quite rare.

Fastest way to understand business logic in a new project

I would like to know the fastest/best way to learn the business logic in a new project.
Most projects have been running for years, some of them are poorly documented, but you still need to know how to work with them. What is the best way to do this? (Use Case Diagram / support from colleagues / code analysis etc.)
The problem with verbose logging is that you may be overloaded with details that do not help, and even if you have the right details, you may misunderstand the big picture.
Moreover, if projects run for years, and are poorly documented, chances are the little available documentation is already obsolete. And chances are, the team did not invest heavily in logging either.
Reverse engineering the code is another approach, but where to start if there are millions of lines of code in the legacy system? Some things can be easily read in code, but many more complex, emergent behavior comes from the interactions between many classes, and this kind of knowledge is the most difficult to extract.
So here is the way to go:
Talk to colleagues. The best approach to move knowledge from one brain to another is direct conversation. It works much better than any formal diagram or any documentation. Unfortunately this is not always possible (e.g. team left)
If 1 is not possible, understand the business user's point of view. May be there is a user manual? Maybe some colleagues of the user-support? if none of those are possible, the ultimate way is to spend some time in the day of the user's life. You will not understand how the system works, but at least you'll get a quick intro in what the system is supposed to do, what matters to the users, and maybe some business rules.
Check for automated test cases. In fact, such test cases are a hidden and up-to date documentation resource.
Check for non-automated test cases, in particular use acceptance tests, and integration tests. If these are not automated, there are chances that they are already obsolete. But it's better than nothing.
Reverse engineer the code. Identify the main classes and how they interact. And yes, some simplified class diagrams will help you to understand how classes are related (no need to document properties and methods: these can be found back in the code). And some sequence diagram will help you to get a picture of the more complex interactions.
Run server, log verbose everywhere. Follow code flow and dig in.

When to use BDD and when just unittests?

I have a task to write tests for future Django Channels+DRF project, don't ask why (we only have swagger documentation for now). So the tests have to test the user use cases (like scenario that may be complex). I have researched about that and found BDD. Here is the question, considering that our project later may have simple unit tests too what should I use, i.e. BDD seems decent but I think it may be excessive for use and may be there is a way of just writing unittests for user use case scenarious and I can get by with that. Does anyone have experience with that? It would be great if you provide articles and code examples.
Scenarios are a bit different to use-cases. A use-case often covers several capabilities. For instance, in the simple laundry use-case shown here, a housekeeper does several things when performing a wash:
washes each load
dries each load.
folds certain items
irons some items
All of these go into the "weekly laundry" use-case.
A scenario in BDD is much more fine-grained. It describes one capability taking place in a particular context or set of contexts. So for instance you might have:
Given the weekly laundry has been washed and dried
And it contains several sheets
And some underpants
When the housekeeper does the folding
Then the sheets should be folded
But the underpants should not.
You can see that we've skipped a couple of the capabilities. This scenario is focused on the capability of folding, and shows how a well-behaved housekeeper would do it. Washing and drying would have to be covered in separate scenarios.
So that's the difference between a use-case and a scenario. Now let's look at a unit test.
When we write code, we don't write it all in one big class or function. We split it up into small pieces. In the same way that a scenario describes an example of the behaviour of the system from the perspective of the users, a unit test describes the behaviour of a class or other small piece of code from the perspective of its users - usually other classes!
So let's imagine that we're on a car purchasing site. We have several capabilities:
Authentication
Searching for cars
Purchasing a car
Listing a car
Removing a car from the list
Each of these will have lots of different classes making it up. Even searching for a car could involve a front-end, a search component, a database of cars, a persistence layer, a webserver, etc.. For each piece of code, we describe the behaviour of that code.
(BDD actually started out at this level; with examples of how classes behave - JBehave was intended to replace JUnit. But JUnit got better and we didn't need this bit any more. I still find it helpful to think of these as examples rather than tests.)
Typically I'll have both scenarios and unit tests in my codebase; one set of them looking from a user / stakeholder perspective at the whole system, and the other set describing my classes in finer detail.
The scenarios help me show how the system behaves and why it's valuable. The unit tests help me drive out good design and separate responsibilities. Both of them provide living documentation which helps to keep the system maintainable and make it easier for newcomers to come on board.
Generally this is how I program:
I have a rough idea of what I want to achieve
I talk to someone about it and write down some scenarios
If we don't quite know what we're looking for, I'll get something working (a spike)
Once we understand better what we're looking for, I automate the scenario first
I take the simplest case and start writing the UI
When the UI needs another class to work, I write some examples of how that code should work (unit tests) first
Then I write the code (or refactor it, because spikes are messy)
When that code needs another class to work, I write some examples of it
If I don't have code that's needed at any point in my unit tests, I use mocks.
Generally we keep the scenarios and the unit tests in different places.
You can see some examples of how I've done this here. It's a tetris game with scenarios which automate the whole game through the UI, and lower-level unit tests which describe the behaviour of particular pieces like the heartbeat which drops the shapes.
Having said that - if your codebase is very simple, you can probably get away with just the scenarios or just the unit tests; you might not need both. But if it starts getting more complex, consider refactoring and adding whatever you need. It's OK to be pragmatic about it, as long as it's easy to change.

Standard library in ABAP

Is there something similar to a standard library for modern ABAP (maybe even OO-Abap)? For example a curated list of objects that address some of the most common programming tasks like
high-level data structures (not just plain internal tables)
working with file paths and directories
working with files (reading, saving, ...)
working with different file types (text, csv, xml, ...)
regular expressions
working with the environment (client, application server)
...
My current workflow is to stumble upon a problem like getting the extension of a file from a filename (or something fairly similar and easy). Then I have three options:
Dig through a ton of (mostly old and lacking) posts on SDN until i maybe find a pointer to solve the problem
Hack away and create a one-off solution to the problem
Take my time and implement a good and well documented solution
Many times I feel a bit lost. A lot of the available information is old, bad or both. Is there a more structured approach to tackle the problem of finding a suitable abstraction in the ABAP-world?
To answer your first question no, unlike C, C#, Java, there is no need to include a library since all the functions are always available to you, so in that regards it might be simpler. What you are asking though is a great question, I am sure you probably see tons of queries in SDN for "Is there a Function module for?" etc.
There isn't an easy answer but In SAP ABAP I think the easiest way might be to find this is by looking at packages. Similar to a library by looking at a package for the type of function your looking for might get you there. For example if I am looking for handling files I might look for the control framework package and there I can see all the available functions/classes/methods/BAPIs etc. that are related to front end controls/file handling etc. and might be able to find what I am looking for. Note its not perfect as the way packages are used has changed from time to time so its actually better for finding functions related to for example purchasing or sales etc. but its one way that we use.
Like other languages in that we still need to know what library to link in to get the function you need, in ABAP you just have to find the related package. Hope it helps a little, I know its not perfect. Example package for front end controls
For working with the environment:
If you have access to SAP there is a transaction code called BAPI
Here you could find a hierarchical list of all the main objects in SAP (i.e. Material, Purchase Order, etc)
In this list you could find documentation, the function modules used for the object (i.e. créate/get detail/update etc)
And digging into the function modules could take a look to the structures, receiving parameters, etc
The other questions are a little bit complex, I am not aware of any comprehensive list but digging into SCN usually is easy to find a solution for the most common things like handling files, etc
In the particular case of regular expressions, SAP native language, ABAP, has keywords for handling them, but you also have a class in SAP called CL_JAVA_SCRIPT which you could use for doing thigs in "JavaScript way"
For example I used this class in the past to evaluate a simple formula provided in a string (i.e 3 + 2 * 5 )
This is an operation really complex to do in ABAP but easy to do in JS.

SAP Reuse Library (SE83) is the most close thing to what you are looking for. It provides common development tasks grouped in hierarchy (UI controls, standard dialogs, confirmation prompts) and contains code snippets for each with commonly used classes/modules:
Though, it is incomplete and lacks many popular things.

folder structure for project documentation

I saw some questions raised about the folder structure of source codes, but I never see the question about folder structure of project documentation. I googled it and still do not see many articles talk about.

IMHO depending on your document management system the choice of structure for your documents may not be an issue. When looking at the problems project related documents are trying to solve you typically come to the conclusion that documents are about communication.
Different documents attempt to communicate different things (or contexts); test plans discuss how testing should/has been executed, requirements specifications discuss how the business rules should be applied, architecture documents discuss the technical components and so forth. Each of these documents might have the need for its own unique structure. For example the structure you choose for your test plans may be vastly different from the structure you need for your architecture documents.
When keeping the communication issue and the document context in mind I generally come back to these 2 key aspects.
Searchability – What is the easiest way to find the document I am looking for?
Versioning – How do I know that the document I am looking for is the most recent one?
I feel searchability is the most important thing to remember because different people call the same document by different names. For example some people call Business Requirements documents Functional Specifications. Some people call Functional Specifications use case documents. As you cannot always govern the naming convention of documents I feel finding the right document to be far more important than the folder or place in which it is stored.
So to answer your question I would simply answer by saying it doesn’t really matter which structure you use, just that you should use some form of document management system (SharePoint, Documentum, Trim, etc). The benefits are simply too great to work without one :)
