I want to use the scripting wizard in SQL Server 2008 to generate a copy of the whole database
It seems to have worked before because I have generated scripts including both the CREATE DATABASE and CREATE TABLE statements, but now I am only getting the CREATE TABLE scripts.
I know I can script creating the database separately and chain the statements together, but have I missed an option that automatically includes the CREATE DATABASE script?

if you choose the option "Script entire database and all database objects" in the wizard. database creation is part of the script.
And in the advanced section i don't see an option to exclude Database creation.however there are lot of other things you can configure there.
I know its very late to respond to this question. I faced this issue recently. There is an option in the advanced section "Script Database Create" which will be false by default. Make it as true and it will add create database script also. Thank you.

I'm trying to save the whole database to a query in sql server 2008. I have experience with mysql and phpmyadmin, and over there I used to have a simple button to save the database, including constraints and basically everything, to a simple query.
that query basically recreates the database i created just as it was. I think you guys understand what I mean.

You can generate scripts to recreate the database structure in SSMS:
Right-click a database, choose Tasks > Generate Scripts... and go through the wizard.
You do not get insert scripts for all the data by default, you need to choose that in the Advanced options in the wizard, Types of data to script choose Schema and data/Data only/Schema only`
For SQL Server, I generally go with a backup/restore point of view. You can backup your entire database to a file, and then choose to restore that database (To another name as I often use for recreating new test databases).
I don't know about creating a query out of the database, but the effect of both seems to be the same result.
Is there a tool that will let me generate a single script containing all tables and views? Sql Publishing Wizard drops everything (so all data is lost) and recreates it. It does have an option to not drop, but in that case, it doesn't update tables that exist (if any columns have changed).
In SQL Server Management Studio 2008 you can right-click on a database in the object explorer, go to Tasks > Generate Scripts..., and that will give you the option to choose not only what object types you want to script, but whether or not you want to script the drop as well.
When you are making changes to existing tables, you should be writing alter table scripts to make the change and then putting them in source control like any other code. Then when you deploy a set of changes, you run the scripts you created for that deployment.
Otherwise, yes use SQL compare.
Should you look at the Red Gate products specifically SQL Compare. They'll handle any situation you could need concerning script generation and database synchronization. (You can get a trial license too, to try it out and see if it is what you need.)
Have a look at this tool can be used which has the capability to generate the create and drop scripts for the SQL server objects, provided in a configuration file.
This tool uses the same mechanism as SSMS tool uses to generate the script.

I'm looking for a way to do something analogous to the MySQL dump from SQL Server. I need to be able to pick the tables and export the schema and the data (or I can export the schema via SQL Server Management Studio and export the data separately somehow).
I need this data to be able to turn around and go back into SQL Server so it needs to maintain GUIDs/uniqueidentifiers and other column types.
Does anyone know of a good tool for this?
From the SQL Server Management Studio you can right click on your database and select:
Tasks -> Generate Scripts
Then simply proceed through the wizard. Make sure to set 'Script Data' to TRUE when prompted to choose the script options.

This is your best tool for performing this task. You can generate a script that will build whichever tables you wish from a database as well as insert the data in those tables (as far as I know you have to export all of the data in the selected tables however).
To do this follow these steps:
Right-click on your database and select Tasks > Generate Scripts
In the Generate and Publish Scripts wizard, select the "Select specific database objects" option
Expand the "Tables" tree and select all of the tables you wish to export the scheme and data for, then click Next
In the next screen choose how you wish to save the script (the Output Type must remain set as "Save scripts to a specific location"), then click the Advanced button in the top right corner
In the newly opened window, under the General section is a setting called "Types of data to script", set this to "Scheme and data" and click OK
Click Next, review the export summary and click Next again. This will generate the script to your selected destination.
To restore your database, simply create a new database and change the first line of your generated script to USE [Your.New.Database.Name], then execute. Your new database will now have all of the tables and data you selected from the original database.
I had a hell of a time finding this option in SQL Management Studio 2012, but I finally found it. The option is hiding in the Advanced button in the screen below.
I always assumed this contained just assumed advanced options for File generation, since that's what it's next to, but it turns out someone at MS is just really bad at UI design in this case. HTH somebody who comes to this thread like I did.

Use third party tools such as ApexSQL Script or SSMS Toolpack for more advanced scripting that includes some preprocessing, selective scripting and more.
Check out SSMS Tool Pack. It works in Management Studio 2005 and 2008. There is an option to generate insert statements which I've found helpful moving small amounts of data from one system to another.
With this option you will have to script out the DDL separately.

Run it with no arguments for a wizard. Give it arguments to run on commandline.

BCP can dump your data to a file and in SQL Server Management Studio, right click on the table, and select "script table as" then "create to", then "file..." and it will produce a complete table script.

I know this has been answered already, but I am here to offer a word of warning.
We recently received a database from a client that has a cyclical foreign key reference. The SQL Server script generator refuses to generate the data for databases with cyclical references.
I have a SQL Server 2008 DB. I want to extract SOME tables (and associated schema, constraints, indexes, etc) and create a SQL Server Express DB. It isn't a sync of the target, we stomp on it.
We ONLY need to do this in the file system (not across the wire). We are not fond of the synchronization stuff and at this point don't know how to run SSIS. We are a C# shop and a little code is ok. Like using the C# bulk import stuff, but that won't create the schema.
Suggestions?
My suggestion:
Back up the database
Restore under new name and file
Detach restored database from SQL Server
You now have a standalone file that you could use with SQL Server Express.
We use a tool from Red-Gate called SQL Compare to generate schema-complete SQL scripts. It's about $400, but well worth it. You pick the objects you want (users, tables, views, functions - whatever) you want, and it will generate a SQL Script to re-create them in your new database. Essentially, it's the same as Right-Click -> "Script To... New Window" in SSMS, but all at once, and it has a number of other features your shop might find useful as well.
As Scott pointed out (I couldn't figure out how to comment on his post), you can do a backup and restore, detach and attach from one server version to another assuming that the database is less than 4GB.
Does anyone know how to create an entire database from a visual studio database project? Rather then running logs of smaller scripts individually.

In VS express you do the following- It should be similar in the other versions but I don't have them in front of me.
Open Database Explorer (Ctrl-Alt-S)
Right Click "Data Connections" > "Add Connection"
Set 'Data Source' To Microsoft SQL Server Database File
Enter a name for your new Database
Choose your authentication method
It should confirm the creation of the database from there...
In Database Explorer Expand your Database and right click tables > Add new table and so on
It looks like I completely misunderstood the question. If you are trying to generate a script from an existing project for export the Database publishing wizard may do what you need.

Are you using vs2008 team edition? If so use the db edition and you can use schema compare to create tables, along with stored procedures, views, etc.

The other way I have done is to publish the database, which will create a large sql file for schema and/or data, and then you can execute that in SQL Server Management Suite.
