I am writing a C++-CLI library in VS 2008, it highlights only the keywords. I would like to have highlighting for CLR types and the types that I define as well. Tried Tools->Options->Environment->Fonts and Colors doesnt seem to work. Can someone let me know how to do it in VS without using any plugin (happy to use if the plugin is free).
You cannot get this out of Visual Studio. Its syntax highlighting is based on lexical analysis. Which detects simple programming elements, keyword, identifier, comment, number, string literal, preprocessor directive, etc. Selectively highlighting identifiers is a much harder problem, it requires parsing the text.
Not only is that slow, affecting the text rendering speed, it is also very difficult to do since the text is almost always in an un-parsable state as you're editing the code. The universal plug-in for the C++ IDE is Visual Assist from Whole Tomato. But it certainly isn't free, these kind of add-ons never are. No idea to what degree they support C++/CLI, you'd have to try with the trial download.

there is currently maxscript programming support inside sublime text.
I was wondering bacause now the syntax highlighting and everything alreay exists for maxscript, how to go about it to make maxscript a supported programming language inside other ide's or editors?
The jetbrains applications comes to mind first (webstorm etc.)
or even inside open online IDE's like Ace of Codemirror.
Because that would be great.

None of JetBrains IDEs provide support for maxscript:(, and I'm not aware of any custom plugins for this language.
If all you need is a basic syntax highlighting, you can either try searching for MaxSript textmate bundles (see Is it possible to get Ruby syntax highlighting in PHPStorm?) or register your own file type, defining a syntax highlighting for it (http://www.jetbrains.com/webstorm/webhelp/new-file-type.html).

I would recommend Microsoft Visual Studio Code with MaxScript syntax plugin. The syntax highlighting and overall coding experience is close to perfect.

I'm very disappointed with c++ builder intellisense, so I'm wonder is there any good intellisense that can be used in c++ builder? Something like visual studio have "Visual assist". My current version of builder is 2010, is the x2 have better intellisense?

Code Blocks allows the user to hide all the text within an opening brace and a closing brace.
DevC++ can only give colors to different stuff. And it's really old. I used to use it when I was learning C++ at school.
MS Visual C++ allows the user to hide all the text within a function or class and comments that are longer than one line. This is my personal favorite. But it's a bit heavy for old systems (like my 5 year-old laptop).
If I were you, I'd start testing any compiler I find for some time. This way you can see which one mostly suits you.
I wish to get a quick feeling for how much “copy and paste” coding we have, there are many tools for C# / Java to check for this type of thing. Are there any such tools that work well with VB.NET?
(I have seen what looks like lots of repeated code, but wish to get some number to help me make a case for sorting it out)

It does not cope when the names of local variables, or parameters etc may have been changed, e.g it just matches on lines of text being the same.

DuplicateFinder is open source, but otherwise looks very match like Simian, e.g it just works on lines of text
ConQAT - Continuous Quality Assessment Toolkit seems to have a clone detector that works for VB.NET (not tried it yet)
Gendarme is a bit like FXCop and has a AvoidCodeDuplicatedInSameClassRule rule, this looks very promising, as it avoids the problem of working at the text level. Just tried it, it is the best solution so far, pity it does not search with a greater scope.
Before claiming that this question is a duplicate, please check that the other question addresses VB.NET, as a lot of tools that work well for C# don't work so well for VB.NET. (However it would not surprise me if this question is a real duplicate)

CloneDR is parameterized by a full grammar for the programming language in question. So it doesn't just match lines. Rather, it can find clones which are syntactically well-formed, with variations that are more than just identifier changes, regardless of where they stop or start in a line.
The engine on which CloneDR rests, The DMS Software Reengineering Toolkit" is a tool for analyzing large scale systems in any programming language, and uses language descriptions to drive the analysis. DMS has a wide variety of language front ends already available.
Presently it has VBScript and VB6 (as dialects of "Visual Basic"). It doesn't have VB.net, but that would be pretty straightforward to do given the DMS infrastructure and our experience with lots of other languages.
So, CloneDR could do this just fine, with a small bit of effort on our part.
EDIT October 2010: VB.net added as a language CloneDR can process.
Atomiq supports vb.net amongst other languages, and the results are nicely presented.
JetBrains published console tool set Resharper Console Tools to run duplication analysis. Once installed it allows you to do the same analysis as TeamCity does and generate duplicates report locally and even include duplicates search into custom build process with MSBuild. This tool does exactly what you need. More details you can find here at JetBrains blog post

Simian (Similarity Analyser) identifies duplication in Java, C#, C, C++, COBOL, Ruby, JSP, ASP, HTML, XML, Visual Basic, Groovy source code and even plain text files.
I once saw an impressive demo of Pattern Insight; its CP Miner may be what you’re looking for: http://patterninsight.com/products/cp-miner.php. It seems to be language-independent, though I couldn’t find anything explicit about languages other than C/C++.

For better or for worst we now have a VB.NET coding standards document that is based on a C# coding standard as enforced by StyleCop.
For example
the number of spaces you should put in each side of a “+” sign etc
all instance Members (fields and methods!) must be access as “me.fieldName”
all shared members must be accessed as “className.fieldName”

I am looking for (ideally free) tools that will check for that short of rules on VB.NET code, as these are style issues that don’t make it into the compiled output, FxCop is not useful.
(I would personally match rather that we just check for important things like duplicated code and single reasonability for each class (so no more multi thousand line classes!), but as I need to keep to the coding standard document I wish to have a tool to help me do so.)

I am looking for a list of VB.NET code checking tools, with a short summery of what each tool can do and its limitations. If the tools are not free, please include some ideal of cost.
Does anyone have experience using CodeRush/Refactor! or ReSharper with VB.NET to check for this type of coding style issues?
I know of no free source code analysis tools with good VB support. There are, however, at least two commercial tools that may be suitable:

Personally, I prefer the CodeIt.Right rule authoring mechanism, so I would favour it if considerable custom rule development were planned. However, if you just want to use out-of-the box rules, Code Auditor ships with quite a few more code style rules than CodeIt.Right, most of whose built-in rules target the compiled IL (like FxCop).
The only ones I know of are:

Of course, this only operates on compiled assemblies, so doesn't give the same functionality as StyleCop, and certainly won't help with things like naming schemes.
However, the closest thing is:
Aivosto's Project Analyzer v9.0 for Visual Basic, VB.NET and VBA
The full version is not free, but this is the closest thing to StyleCop for VB.NET that I can find.
There have been a number of calls for a VB.NET version of Microsoft's StyleCop, such as those in this thread on the code.msdn.microsoft.com site. That same thread also gives some good insight into why a VB.NET version doesn't exist.
I use ReSharper on a daily basis and I find it fine for both code formatting and for solving naming issues. It allows to configure how naming must be enforced, how issues are displayed (hint, suggestion, warning, etc) and provides a precise code formatter (space, paranthesis, line breaks, this qualifier, etc).
Note that I don't know if it can be run in batch mode.
Turning Option Explicit on by default is always a great idea and should be standard practice. I would argue it should be turned on by default in VS out of the box. But it doesn't come close to enforcing the out of the box rules that StyleCop does for C#, nor does it allow for you to create your own rules.
The whole reason for StyleCop's existence is because FxCop only works on compiled assemblies, leaving web projects out in the cold for a similar tool. With StyleCop, web developers get the same great rule enforcement and tight VS integration. It is a great tool for any C# developer.
It is unfortunate that it is only C# capable, a VB version would satisfy a large community that is left wanting something similar.
There already is a very good style tool built into the VB compiler. It is called Option Explicit On, put it at the top of the source code file or use Tools + Options + Project and Solutions + VB Defaults, Option Explicit = On. If that wasn't turned on previously there could be a mountain of errors when you compile your code after changing that.
If it is clean or already turned on, consider that you are 95% close to writing clean C# code and that the language doesn't really matter anymore.
I've seen several responses to questions asking for IDEs where text editors were suggested and vice-versa. That makes me think that people treat them as the same thing, where I draw clear distinctions.
How do you define "text editor" and "IDE"?
Do you see a difference between the two tools?
Note that I accepted an answer which I think best addressed the concepts of "text editor" and "IDE". However, it's just my personal opinion of what best addresses the question and I will continue to check in on this question from time to time to see if there's a better answer and I will accept that one.
The confusion arises from the fact that a text editor is a core component of every IDE. But, an IDE has much more than just a text editor; it also has interfaces to compilers, debuggers, profilers, reference material, and more.
Many text editors have plugins or other flexible extension mechanisms, often including the ability to "wrap" external tools like those I mentioned above. The key difference, IMHO, is the "I" in IDE - integrated. An IDE is (again, IMHO) something that's purposefully designed to support a specific set of tools, one of which is a text editor.
I use both and I suggest you do too. Sometimes an IDE can make development faster - like code completion and refactoring support. Fast find of files and symbols, functions, classes in project not to mention project management features. Sometimes they'll manage the build for you. Maybe it has a built in debugger (a good built in debugger is worth gold). How about code snippets and file templates. Sometimes an IDE will help you build GUI interfaces and data stores. I've seen ones that help you build regexps and run SQL queries.
These (IMO) are all sugar. I also use a plain text editor (although I really appreciate code syntax coloring nowadays) and roll most of that other stuff myself. Some of the newer text editors are creeping into IDE territory (e.g. TextMate) since they are extensible enough to allow for most of the above paragraphs niceties.
In 90% of the cases I use what I am given or what the majority of the teams uses (I am a contractor). This reduces the build conflicts that can arise if you decide to go it on your own. By learning to use IDE's, text editors and everything in between you will stay flexible and able to cope with whatever is thrown at you.
I do, but it's more in the way you use them than a difference in the software itself. Some software is used as an IDE by some, but a mere text editor by others. Some software can only be a text editor, some is difficult to use as only a text editor, and some can be easily used as both.
I would say that such stalwarts as Vi(m) and Emacs are used by some as text editors and some as IDEs. Things like eclipse, visual studio, etc only really make sense as IDEs and things like notepad can hardly be anything but a text editor.
I would say if you stay in your text editor to do other things - compile, debug, etc - then you're using it more like an IDE. Quite where I'd draw the line, I'm not sure.
The obvious difference is the "I" from the IDE. IDE's are an integrated platform that allows not only editing, but debugging, file management for your project, and usually cool features like syntax highlighting and code completion. oh yeah, and integration of tools and compilers, as well as source control.
To me, a text editor is light weight tool used to edit text based documents. There is no mark up or formatting of the text other than defining the "system" font for the editor. Useful tools can still be part of a text editor, like a folder tree, syntax highlighting, even cmd line execution of compilers. In the end though, all it does it allow you edit the text in a document. It will not display it to you in a different way. ie: it will not show you a grid when viewing an XML document
An IDE is much more robust and is generally specific to a language or framework.
you know, before i started writing this answer, i had a clear line between a text editor and an IDE. But now, i'm thinking they are one in the same. I mean really and IDE like VS is just a glorified text editor. And a text editor like Textpad is an IDE with a much smaller budget for development of features.
I guess the real answer is, an IDE is backed by a large company or group expanding it's features in many different directions. But a text editor is built by a small group of people, with just enough features to get by.
If you look at Kate, the text editor and Kdevelop, the IDE the main difference is that Kdevelop supports project management (CVS/Subversion) and build scripts, whereas Kate does not.
Personally where I think the 'line' is drawn between IDE's and Text Editors is knowledge of the end program, rather than just knowledge of it's source code.
As examples:
Can it compile your code into a binary? It's an IDE
Does it have an integrated debugger? It's an IDE
In order to have an integrated debugger it needs to know about either the binary compiled program, or in the case of scripting languages, the in-memory interpretation of the program as it runs.
Note: Things like intellisense don't rely on your code being compiled into anything, so I wouldn't say that intellisense implies IDE
Note 2: Many text editors like textmate have plugin systems which can be extended to build your project. This does not make them an IDE, as they are simply shelling out to a plugin, they don't have any knowledge about the building itself.
